Robot vacuum cleaner

I've decided to get a robot vacuum cleaner. Any recommendations? I have thick carpet in the living room, wooden floors in the kitchen, lino in the bathroom, carpets in the bedroom. I work from home so don't mind moving it from one room to another if necessary.
I'm hoping to spend a £100-200, not £500.

I have one! Got it for £60 in lidl! It's good for a quick tidy up but it's not like doing a thorough hoover

I need something reasonably thorough. My DC are semi-feral and I hate housework - not a great combination....

I have a roomba. Its ok but not a thorough clean. Its programmed to move around in a grid. Some things it will miss because they are stuck (hair often gets stuck), some things it will push around. Some things it just isn't strong enough to pick up.

If you use it every day its a big help but it isn't the same as going around with a normal vacuum and having a thorough clean.

Plus if you let the battery run down there's a good chance you'll have to fork out for a new one (alongside the spinning brushes which break very easily and need to be replaced on a regular basis.) This means it needs to constantly be on charge.

I was seduced into buying one years ago by MN. I wish I hadn't bothered really.

We have two roombas ( one upstairs and one downstairs) - I think they are great if used regularly. Ours are used every day. I still do a blitz once a week as we have lots of children and animals - and I have issues

I have a Melissa. It's a bit random. I use for the downstairs hall everyday. And for crumbs in the kitchen area (very small in an open plan house)

Sometimes it flicks the dirt everywhere. Sometimes it spews it's fluff up like some evil vacuum beelzebub. Twice its made a run for it, over come the laser and attempted a suicidal jump down the stairs.

I just think she never forgave me for giving her to DP for a weekend to clean up his budgie shit and feathers. She hates me now. And I have to pay for that.

LemonPledge, that's not really a massive recommendation for the Melissa!

I've had a look on-line and only the more expensive ones seem to cope with thick carpet
Does anyone have one for ~£200 that works well on thick carpet?

I brought this one online for £160. I know thats expensive but the quality of this machine is much better then the cheaper ones and it cleans my carpets better as well. It's amazing we live in a time of robot vacuum cleaners lol.

The problem with Robot & cordless vacs is that battery power isn't yet perfected. They can't generate the same amount of suction and sweeping ability as a mains powered vacuum. They're fine for day to day cleaning to keep on top of the housework or if you have all hard floors but you still need to do a proper clean with a mains powered vacuum every few weeks or so

I read the tale of the MNtter who arrived home to find her roomba had lovingly distributed a dog poo, liberally, but evenly all through the ground floor.

It rather put me off tbh. Although I can see it might not worry the dog free.

rabbit I think that's unfair to cordless vacs myself. I've had a Neato- nothing special and it's annoying having to make sure everything is off the floor- eg no loose cables under the desk that you could just avoid if doing it yourself. Suction nothing like as good as a normal vacuum. Not great on hard floors and doesn't do the corners very well.

My Dyson Animal on the other hand is absolutely the best vacuum I've ever had, of any kind. Fantastic suction, so easy to use. It is so handy to move from room to room that I get carried away and do the whole house when I didn't mean to!

It did cozie.....knocked into the laser emitting thingy and just reversed back and lunged down the stairs....

DS and I believe it's a Vampire too...if there's a strong light shaft on the floor by the kitchen window she halts and backs up fast...I've convinced myself she hisses too

User146 that one's in my budget. Do you mind me asking if you've got thick carpets? I've just had new ones and they're quite springy so I'm wondering if the RoboVac will cope.
