Quote from Magnet - haggling?

Had a quote from Magnet today. Less than we expected but still 32% more than the IKEA quote.

Are they likely to move further on price? We've already got 'half price and VAT off' 'sale' prices which end next Saturday.

Will they try and sell up later? E.g just realised there was no mention of carousels for corners whereas IKEA quote has more drawer units which are presumably more expensive and does include fittings.

The special offer, no VAT, must end Sunday thing is nonsense, so if you're not happy with the price there is still some room for reducing it.

If they do bring the price down in line with Ikea (for the nearest match they have with the same fittings etc), would you prefer the Magnet kitchen?

No, not really. I'm happy with the IKEA standard and options for varying fittings. BUT we've been waiting 8 weeks now for them to finalise plans which is getting very frustrating when we're living with a shell of a kitchen and want it completed ASAP.

I was told this week that they have a pledge to beat a like for like quote.

We have Howdens and Magnet next door to each other. Have been told it will be worth my while to spend a couple of hours flitting between the two. (Howdens coming next week to do a survey.)

Would much prefer the transparency Ikea offers.

B&Q were a grand more again today.

Have told Magnet we'll go with them if the price comes down a bit. :)

We haggled with Magnet when we put in a new kitchen a couple of years ago. The quote came down A LOT.

The kitchen is great, we're really pleased with it and Magnet's customer service was good. I think that depends on the individual store though.

Thanks :)

They dropped £300 which brings them closer to IKEAs quote.

However IKEA STILL haven't sent final plans even after another complaint via email and one on FB.

I hope you don't have the experience I had with Magnet.
The kitchen was not cheap...
There was a problem with 2 units.
Months passed and despite repeated requests nothing was done.
I rang head office and actually cried to the lovely receptionist.
Eventually 6 months approximately after first alerting them to the problem my kitchen was fixed.
It took twenty minutes approximately.
My next kitchen WILL NOT be Magnet.
Personally I think you are mad thinking of using them to install your kitchen.

I think we will just buy the kitchen from them and get our own fitters. Sorry to hear about your experience :(

Definitely get your own fitters.

Magnet (proper shop) wouldn't even give me a quote when I told them I already had a howdens quote, they said the only way they would compete was to use magnet trade and open an account with them. Required a fair bit of paperwork, and if my husband wasn't in construction industry may have been harder, but was worth hassle as took over a grand off the howdens kitchen we eventually bought when they matched like for like.

So a year on...how are all of your kitchens?

I'm totally confused about what to buy & where to buy it from.

I can't really do IKEA as the walls here are a nightmare. Nothing is straight. Fitter is going to have to be a total hero to get it looking good.

If your walls are really that 'out' go for for deeper worktops and set your cabinets all forward off the wall to a plumb line and then simply ( ok it's not that simple ) scribe the worktop in at the back ... Have designed a few like this for clients and even done a couple of Oast houses and round rooms ! Now they can be really tricky !!!

We are in the middle of having a howdens kitchen fitted and it's been a head ache. Firstly the kitchen didn't get delivered until 4pm when it was meant to be delivered first thing so they have paid the fitters wages for the day . Then the larder cupboard and 2 cupboards weren't even put on the order so they have given those for free and picked up a unit they delivered which wasn't ordered. The kitchen was cheap because the fitter got it trade through his business but if it wasn't as cheap as it was I would not be recommending our local Howdens
