Should I buy a carpet and upholstery cleaner?

Those of you with carpet cleaners, tell me about them please? I'm a previous slattern trying to change my ways, and i'm leaning towards buying the bissell powerbrush, mainly for the sofa, the stairs and the upstairs carpet (Downstairs is all hard flooring).

Which model do you have and how do you find it? How long do your carpets take to dry? Worth buying or am I just being profligate?

Thanks!

I had one, but rarely used it because a) the faff of getting it out of the back of the cupboard and setting it up, b) it took ages to dry and c) it wasn't as effective as I expected it to be. Now I hire a Rug Doctor for a couple of days once a year (in the warm summer months) and do the whole house.

I have a Bissell powerbrush and don't think they clean to a good enough standard. I'm selling and getting professional cleaners in - less faff and better results.

I have also tried rug doctors and think they are rubbish too

Thanks everyone. Hmm, maybe I'll hold off for the time being in that case.
