Plain wallpaper you can paint help

Im about to start decorating my house. It has anaglypta or similar embossed paper all over the entire house in various crazy patterns. Its all been painted over as well. I've been told people use this stuf when the walls are a bit bumpy underneath.
Im starting with my lounge and Dining room and have chosen some feature wall paper for one feature wall in each room but want to some plain walls too.
I'm expecting to have to repaper the walls and am wondering what paper can use thats OK to paint over. Do I just use plain lining paper or something better? I'm a complete novice when it comes to wallpapering so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, just lining paper will be fine. It comes in different thicknesses so get a thicker one if your walls are less than perfect once you've stripped the anaglypta.

A good tip I got from a painter-decorator. When you use lining paper leave a small (few mm) space in between each piece. Then fill with polyfilla and gently sand before painting. You don't see the join in the paper and it looks just like a plastered wall. A bit more faff but does give a lovely finish.

Lining paper is exactly what you need and agree thicker is better. Get the stuff where you paste the wall rather than the paper, it's easier. There are some good videos on youtube of how to wallpaper. Bear in mind when watching the videos that paste the wall stuff has less stretch, especially when it's thicker, so it won't go on as easily as you'll see the professional decorators doing with the paste the paper variety, but with a bit of perseverance you will get it up.

Also, don't expect your wall to look perfect - the only wall that looks perfect with lining paper is a wall that didn't need lining paper in the first place! It doesn't hide as much as textured paper. But it will make it good enough, especially once painted.

The advice I was given was not to get the cheapest stuff! In the end I went for the Erfurt vario stuff from here:
