Rug / carpet protector for dining area in Living Room

I"m having issues with mess and hard wear in the dining section of a small-ish living room . We are moving the chairs in the area all the time and there is mess at meal times as DS now 3 remains on the impetuous side...

So I thought a rug, but I would like something [a] I could vacuum over and [b] not worry about tripping over the edges. I looked at the rugs in Ikea and nothing looked like it would do the job.

Has anyone solved a problem like this? Would love to hear how you did it Smile.

How about replacing the flooring with wood/laminate/tiles/vinyl? Carpet in the dining area is very impractical - I wouldn't even trust grown-ups not to mess it up...

Thanks JoJo. It's a sitting room and dining room, so we decided to run the carpet in this room as well. I know there are plastic carpet protectors - can't remember where I've seen one... and I'm thinking a type of hard wearing, flat lying rung might do the trick. Where to find one that is affordable, that part I don't know...

Well, you could try a washable cotton rug. Some people have those in the kitchen and just pop them into the washing machine. The only actual carpet protectors can think of are plastic sheets that builders might use before painting or chemical protectors that repel stains.
