Net curtains - too '80s?!

I'm moving and the living room windows are right next to the pavement. I hate people staring in! It's only a rental property so I don't want to spend on shutters. Are net curtains old hat? I could get some of that pretend frosting stuff but we have beautiful views (apart from the starey people!) so it would be sad to blank them out. Any ideas?

Voiles, "magic" roller blinds or venetians. Online blind shops sell the latter two relatively cheaper. Voiles are even cheaper and easier to fit, but are basically the same sort of thing as nets. You can also get blinds that fit snug into upvc windows (though possibly may damage seals?) and can be opened from the top down - look at conservatory blinds through online sellers.

Personally I have used the plainest of plain nets only slightly gathered - cheap as chips and IMO (I may be deluded) give a more voile-like feel than traditional patterned, gathered nets.

I have the same problem and have voile panels. They're lovely.
