Weight of books on glass shelf

I am thinking of getting a glass table that has a lower shelf. There's lots of space between the lower shelf and the top, and I'd like to pile books in this space. Obviously there's risk of cracking the shelf, but would it still crack if I support the shelf from the floor (piling more books right up to it)?
