Hall, stairs and landing are due to be decorated.
Do I do the darker paint colour above or below the dado rail?
It's currently all yellow...not done by us, previous owners.

We have dark underneath (deep purple) and light on top (plain old magnolia!) it's in our dining room and looks great!

My hall is dark on the bottom, light on top too.

Ours is same colour. White on top and bottom, and rail is white

It's for my hall so I've taped the sample colours that I've painted with the dark on the bottom and the light on the top.

The colours are boring though. Coffee clouded bottom and mocha colour top. I'm scared of colour.

I've had coffee and cream in my hall before. It's not boring. At the moment it's sage green and light cream.

TBH, I feel that a hall should be a calm space to walk into so prefer more muted shades.

I'm about to do black below, cream above - white woodwork.
I went bold in my dining room and it's so fab, I'm being adventurous elsewhere now

Can I ask if the same idea applies to tongue & groove in a bathroom? I'm thinking a stone/grey on t&g and pale walls.
Hope I'm not hijacking op.

Black does look really nice, I've got F&B Railings above on my fireplace wall and the opposite one, the other 2 are Dimity, Underneath on all 4 is Joas White, Dado, skirting and ceiling are all Pointing.
It's my favourite room.

Can I hijack this thread? Wanting to paint my bedroom teal below dado and a neutral above. All fine, except the chimney breast has an old fireplace in it which is black - and no dado rail. Dado extends all the way round rest of room, just not chimney breast. Should I do this wall all teal or the neutral colour?

I'm the opposite way round in my hallway.....white tongue and groove below the dado, deep red above. Lots of mirrors and white framed pictures. It's LOVELY Smile
