Wanting to retrain as a primary teacher. Help needed please

Hi, I would love to change career and become a primary teacher. I currently have no degree and only qualifications up to gcse ( c and above) I am 35 years old and want to go to my nearest uni. How do I go about applying? Is it ucas or do I contact uni directly? Any one any idea how many hours a week this course would be? Any thought will be great. Thanks

Do check, but your university will want evidence of recent, A-Level equivalent study. The best way to do that is to do an Access Course. They're a one year course, run by local colleges, which are aimed at mature students wanting to go to university following a break from education.

After that, you will have to apply via UCAS. The deadline each year to start that September is 15th January.

Don't bank on being able to do any more than a small part time job whilst you're on your degree course (I presume this is why you're asking!) as you will be a full time student, just like any other student. You will have placements at some point or other, too. However, student loans are perfectly adequate to live off, and there is extra help if you've got kids.

If there is no college near you to do an access course, many unis will accept an Open University module instead of access, and they do lots relevant for teaching.

Ring the admissions office at the uni you want to study at and they will let you know what they will be looking for.

Don't do it unless you are prepared to work 50 hours plus a week. You will not have a personel life. Your pay will only go up if you work a 26 consecutive weeks. The government is also scrapping Lin holidays an revising pay to stop garunteed pay rises. Trust me. You have been warned.
