Does anyone work in the Prison Service or Probation?

I'm thinking of both the prison service or probation as a career after my degree is completed.

Just wondered what you think of the job?

Thanks

I'm not in either of those jobs myself, but I have a friend who is a probation officer and has been for about 5 years,(though on maternity leave at the moment) I do know that just before starting ML she was feeling somewhat disgruntled with the service; ever increasing case load and being given too many high risk cases etc...but she works in a particulary difficult area where all the POs are over stretched and she is a particulary conscientious person ...I'll have a word with her and get her to join up here on MN and give you some advice.
Funnily enough I also know a prison officer.. a former policeman, but he has been in the prison service for a year now..and he loves the job..but there again he hasn't been doing it that long.
I hope you get more first hand info from the others soon

my friend has just become a prison officer after being a trained mechanic, royal mail worker, lazy git etc etc It was quite an intensive programme just to get accepted but he is enjoying it so far.

I think I would prefer the prison to the probabtion service if I had to choose one!
