Interview etiquette

I've applied for a local job, nothing flash but it sounds great and would fit in with my life perfectly.

Closing date for applications was 22 April. I received a personal email (not a robot) acknowledging receipt and that they'd get back to me soon.

Interview day was stated as this Thursday (12 May). I haven't heard anything either way.

What's the etiquette? Do I just have to wait it out? I've kept the day clear (but if interview were to be at school run time I would have to make arrangements for kids, not that it's their problem!)

Am I allowed to send polite, short email and if so, which day should I send?

It's a very small job which has not been widely advertised and for which I can't believe there's many applicants and I'd find it hard to believe they simply won't send anything if they don't want me for interview. But maybe that is the case?

I think at this point a short polite email (sent today) would be completely acceptable. No need to mention the childcare issue, just ask for an update.

I'd expect to hear by end of Tuesday. Send a brief email on Wed morning if you haven't heard.

Thanks for responding. Good to know it's acceptable to send. Think I'll split the difference and send tomorrow morning if not heard.

Unfortunately there is no etiquette these days. A lot of employers don't let you know either way. Some don't even let you know even after you've been for an interview!
