Work

What else can I do?

I do a job that I love (I'm a vet) for employers that I really dislike. Following my maternity leave for DD1 they made my life hell and I pretty much fell to pieces then took at least a year to recover. I'm now due to return after maternity leave for DD2 but I can't face going through the same as previous … I can't stress how awful it was. DH now works away during the week so covering the on call rota would take a huge effort so I think I'm going to resign. There are no other jobs available to me in the local area. If I leave then I'll pretty much be leaving my profession.
Any ideas what else I can do for work?
I probably have lots of transferable skills but I've never had to think in this manner as all I've ever wanted to be is a vet. It doesn't have to be highly paid, just flexible and enjoyable. Any suggestions welcome. Smile

Gosh how awful, your poor thing. Can't you take the swines to a tribunal so they are punished.?
Is there no University nearby with a Vet department? Or an agricultural college? Or any Private Labs to work in as a lab assistant or no Human Hospital that would employ you with your considerable skills.
Or stables.

Then what about being a Teaching assistant in a college Science Department? although you would probably qualify for graduate teacher training yourself.

Or as you know about surgery and feeding and nutrition for animals, what about setting up as an animal feed supplier on line. Or an animal behaviourist, like the dog whisperer.

Are there no Meat inspection jobs available locally. ( you do need further qualifications but you could pass them easily)

It is so sad that after you have had such a lot of training that there isn't anywhere suitable to work. You can earn so well, wouldn't it be worth moving house.
Are you a PetVet or Farm Vet.?

You could tutor. The fees are £30 an hour. You could probably easily manage All the Sciences. All the information is on the web. There are fantastic U tube videos covering every Maths GCSE topic. Or set up your own 11+, GCSE tutoring school.
I wish I could help more as I feel for you.

What about locuming? Then you can set your own hours. Or even set up
Your own little business. I met a vet once (I am also from the veterinary industry but I am
Not a vet) who had a very successful business by simply offering home euthanasias.

Thank you for your suggestions.
I'm a horse vet, sadly one of the less 'flexible' parts of the profession. After being pretty much immobilised by my worries o finally started searching for jobs in the scientific sector - there are jobs I never knew existed! Fingers crossed there'll be something out there. Maybe I'll even be able to afford time for a horse so that I can have my daily fix!

I'm a vet too and have seen this happen to other friends. Have you considered industry looking for a role as a technical support vet in one of the drug companies the vast majority of the time you work from home. There are periods when you would have to travel BEVA and annual sales conferences, but you know these dates long in advance and can plan.
I am still in practice and make it work by having an au pair (I'm a single parent).
The other step would be transition to small animal practice that tends to be slightly kinder to working mums.
