Switching jobs & recruitment consultants

Hello All, can anyone offer any insight please? I am on the job hunt and currently sending my CV off to various employers direct and also to recruitment consultants. When I fire my CV off to recruitment companies I never hear a thing. I call to check they have received it and am lucky if I even manage to get past the receptionist to speak to the recruiter. This is London based and the advertising industry. What am I doing wrong? I "think" I have pretty good experience (15 years doing what I do), and my CV has been made all shiny and new - had it checked by a few people and they all say it's good to send out.
So is there a nack to blinking recruitment consultants? I am really starting to loose the plot with this. Am I too old - early 40's? it's been over 8 years since I have had to to this and things seem to have changed dramatically in this time. Those I do manage to speak to all seem to be extremely young and don't really seem to be fully up to speed with stuff. They feel more like sales people than recruitment consultants. I apologise now to any recruitment people out there - I have no doubt there any many great ones out there, but so far I have not managed to speak to many.

I feel old and past it and feel like my skills and experience are of no value. Financially I need to work and I WANT to work!! Any advice/tips are really really welcome PLEASE. x

I always phone to try and get someone to take a look at my CV - I've never had any luck being called from submitting my cv to them - are you on LinkedIn? I've been contacted a few times by recruiters on there. Don't get demotivated - I think you have to push a fair bit to find the right job, just starting this process myself
