change of hours when returning to work

Hi. Due to unforseen circumstances I am having to return to work earlier than planned. I also need to reduce my hours from 30 to 16 or 20 hours per week because of childcare and also other circumstances. But just don't know if my work will agree. And whether financially I could manage on 16hours a week. Have asked my work for advice and also cutie advice, job centre, tax office etc and got nowhere. Has anyone else been in this position and able to offer advice or suggest anyone that could help? Am desperate! Thanks :)
