IT: what variety of roles?

You know when you're a kid at school and the jobs you discuss are policeman, doctor, astronaut etc. And nothing much else is presented as an option usually resulting in many just falling in various roles by chance.

So I'm looking to retrain and start working again and thinking about IT. I would slowly do courses part time (if I pursued this area) but am flummoxed by what roles exist within the industry.

Can anyone point me to some site where I can find out more?

Hi winky!

You could have a look here as a start:

www.bcs.org/category/7316

There are loads of roles! Web development, coding, business analysis, network specialists, database admin...

What is it about IT that appeals to you? That might help narrow it down.

there are a lot of business analyst roles and quite straight forward to train (see bcs per other link). Look into project management and testing too. If you want to do more technical, DBAs seem to be often in demand. As a way in, working on an IT help desk or 2nd line support can be useful. Steer away from consulting roles though, or things that say client facing unless you like long hours and stress or love dealing with people. Personally I'd be careful about getting into coding as ime it often gets outsourced away.

DH is a freelance coder, (in England) I think lots of jobs still out there for those who will hustle.
