Any OTs about that can tell me a bit more about the reality of the training, work, job prospects?

Hi my daughter has a job as an assistant paedriatic OT with the NHS. They are funding her to do her degree. She loves the role but finds the degree quite dry and hard going alongside working 4 days (at uni the other day) and running a home. If you have any specific questions I will ask her.

Hi Snow
I am just coming to the end of the 2nd year of my degree. I had no real idea about what OT was before I started, but thought it looked like something I could do a decent job of. It's been nothing like I expected - and I am loving it all, the studying (aka break from the kids!), and the placements which have been in neuro rehab (so stroke / brain injury recovery), and a driving assessment centre. It's a massively varied area to work in, and if you do start the training you'll change your mind 100 times about which area you might want to work in. The NHS funds your course and there's also a means tested bursary, in the first year I found the studying quite dry and hard going and didn't seem to really "get" what they wanted from me, but in the 2nd year it's been much more practically based with case studies etc and I've found it easier to deal with, although the juggling between childcare and study can be tough at times.
I think Mums make excellent OTs as we have experience of dealing with just about everything.
If you have any other questions, I'm happy to help.... good luck making your decision!
BTW although we can't be guaranteed work once we're finished, I like to think that the fact the NHS are still paying for the training and investing in OT is a good sign!
