"Able"children in education

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between NACE - national association for able children in education, and the G&T register? DD1 was chosen to take part in an 'enrichment' day for history a few months ago because her teacher said she was 'very able' but is not as far as i am aware on any list?

The G&T register is a mandatory list of children in the school who fall within a certain pre-defined percentage of ability/potential. The DCSF require ALL schools to maintain a G&T register, maintain a policy of the criteria they use to select pupils for the register and demonstrate that they are catering for these children's ability.

Schools are advised to involve parents when they put a pupil on the register. Many avoid doing this - or don't put pupils on the register at all - because they are paranoid about yummy mummies competing and comparing outside the school gates.

NACE is a private body.

Thanks Dadatlarge, knew I could rely on you. P.S not many yummy mummies at my childrens school, more like slummy mummies fagging it and cackling at the school gate, of which, I hasten to add, i am not one.

MitchyInge, is that your school's terminology? Where did you hear about the "More Able Pupil Programme"? Some less clued-up schools go to great length to avoid using the term "gifted".

Hi Dad - one of mine is in a 'more able' scheme at one school, the other is on the g&t register at another. Just idly wondering whether they are the same thing or not!

There is no difference at our primary school - they call it the 'Able, Gifted and Talented' programme/register.

ah yes, that is what middle child's one is called now - able, gifted and talented but it used to be just g&t am sure

The "more able" scheme sounds great unless it's being used as a substitute for G&T (which would make it illegal).
