I think it is actually a very bad idea to combine Nursery and Reception classes. Your ds' behaviour sounds a lot like my ds1 was when he started Reception. I think that the pressure of having to behave a certain way at school was only unleashed when he got home. This lasted for about a term. I would have a word with his teachers and ask for their insight into things and to find out how he is managing at school/nursery.

I know that when my dss started school and nursery they did actually know more than was taught IYSWIM - eg letters and numbers, but IMO nursery and Reception are really more about socialisation and getting used to school routines and becoming more independent than they are about academic work. Is there any way you could volunteer at the nursery for a session or two to get a feel for how he's managing?

It sounds like there could be discipline issues at the nursery, particularly as the teacher herself said that peer pressure was contributing to his aggression.
