DP has just been given antipdepressant Cipramil and if anyone else has taken or is taking I'd really appreciate some feedback.

it makes me quite nervous that he's been put on them - actually the whole idea of taking something to alter your mood longterm makes me nervous but after two years of depression and an inability to cope with pressure, he needs some help. Has also been referred to a counsellor but I'm worried abuot what will happen - they've said he'll need to take them for at least 6 months. I don't understand what happens when you want to come off antidepressants - how do you carry on without them?

Katierocket, don't be scared.

I began taking Cipramil about a year ago and have found it very good. I have clinical depression and started off (v. reluctantly) taking Prozac which made me feel totally out of control and very dry mouthed. My GP switched me to Cipramil and after about 3 weeks I began to feel much more on an even keel. My dosage began at 20mg and was increased gradully to 60mg. Have just felt comfortable enough to reduce to 40mg.

I also had counselling: one counsellor was very sweet but very annoying and ineffective. The other was excellent and has had a hugely positive effect on my recovery.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that it is strange to have to take any medication regularly but it is there for a reason. It will take DP about 3 - 4 weeks to really feel the effects of the drug but it is infinitely better than not being able to cope. Counselling is great if you find the right person. I was deeply sceptical but have completely changed my mind about it.

I don't know why your DP has been prescribed Cipramil but he needs to allow himself time to feel the benefits but also to reassess his life to prevent getting to this stage again.

katierocket I also asked advice about Cipramil a couple of months ago.

My personal experience with taking Cipramil wasn't a positive one like Ghengis' - I felt nauseous a lot of the time and it interrupted my sleep quite significantly. After a short time I stopped taking it because I felt sick & 'spaced out' on it.

I'm now taking a low dosage of another type of antidepressant, which I'm finding a lot better. I guess it just depends what suits the individual. Good luck.
