Has anyone been on or are currently taking Cipromil? (an anti-depressant). Just wondering how effective it's been and if there are any side-effects. Is it normal to feel worse before you feel better? I've actually been feeling a bit more down in the last few days since I started using it. I've also had a bit of nausea, but apparently this is one of the initial side-effects, which the doctor said will settle down. Appreciate any input... thanks.

Hi Holly02... I was on Cipromil for about 18 months when I suffered from PND after having DS. I do remember having a few extra down days before it started to work but after a couple of weeks it started to kick in and I felt a whole deal better .... I was pretty bad to start with and I knew I was feeling a bit better when I was able to take the rubbish out !!!!
I had no side effects that I noticed, the whole time I was on them, and to be honest, I wouldn't have minded if there were any minor ones as the benefits of feeling vaguely human far outweighed anything else!!!
HTH and I hope they start kicking in for you soon and that you start feeling better ... thinking of you XXXXXG

Yes this was what I was on as well. I remember a week or so of feeling worse, but then I felt a whole lot better and started my recovery.

I do not remember any side affects other than the first few weeks.

Thanks Ghosty & Breeze, I heard from somewhere that weight gain can be a side-effect, but I hope not because that's the last thing I need on top of this!! I have heard some good things about it too so I'm just waiting for it to take effect... as Michael J Fox says "I love it when the drugs kick in." (only kidding... I'm new to all this, really).

I've never had to take the antidepressant road before but having had a harder-than-usual time over the last six months, I feel like I need a little respite. It's really good to have support from you guys at mumsnet.

They made all the difference to me. It kind of puts everything all the emotional crap on hold till you are in a better way to deal with it.

Now you come to mention it I did gain weight, I would like to me able to blame the pill, but it was because I bingo eated. So do not worry.

Of course I meant binge eating not bingo.

I didn't put on any weight Holly ... and nor did I know that might be a side effect. I think that they are bound by law to state EVERY single case of a side effect on the box ... so if only one person put on weight in the XX thousands who have taken it then they have to state it ... IYKWIM!
For me the benefits of Cipromil were that I could be normal again ... my SIL was on something for PND that she described as 'happy pills' (can't remember the name) but Cipromil didn't make me 'high' or 'hyper' or anything ... just allowed me to get a grip on motherhood and reality without dissolving into tears for no reason while watching telly or running out of people's houses in tears or deserting full shopping trolleys in supermarkets ... yes, in tears ... with no warning whatsoever!!!!

So far am experiencing a lack in concentration, some drowsiness, and this afternoon I left the house with one shoe. I was definitely not this flaky before!! Am feeling quite different but not in a good way - yet. Fingers crossed...

Just bear with it Holly02, It can be a tricky time, now you come to mention it, I do remember my concentration going, I remember it quite scared me actually and thought I was having some kind of fit. Just give it a little bit longer, and if you want to speak more about it on a ono to one basis, just ask mumsnet to pass on your email address and I would be happy to chat. Good Luck and remember it is just a phase.

Holly I'm taking cipralex (didn't get on with prozac)which only came on the market last year and is the latest version of Cipromil. This is my fifth week on them and must say I do feel better. The only side-effects is I've totally lost my libido (which is causing probs) and I was feeling exhausted in the afternoons so much so I was falling asleep and not being able to watch ds's.Now take them in the evening which seems to have helped.
stoped crying and no longer have suicidal thoughts though anxiety seems to have increased.
Hope yours works for you.

Holly02 - I've been taking Cipramil for around 18 months now and have found it better than the other anti-d's I've been on (Imipramine and Prozac).

I was lucky in that I didn't experience any side effects, but I do know it doesn't start to kick in until you've been on it a few weeks (the official line is two, but I think that's a little conservative myself). Stick with it and I hope it works for you. Btw, with regard to the nausea, I don't know what time of day you take it but if you're not taking it at bedtime, try doing that - the nausea may not bother you as much then.

Best of luck.

Has anyone developed sun light sensitivity while on or following a course of Cipromil? I was on a course for 6 months and still have the condition today - 5 years later.

In addition I did put on weight about a stone but this came off easily when I finished my course.
