If she takes the antibiotics, about a week, but the worst swelling and sore throat will go down after 2/3 days.

Depends how old your dd is, but if the antibiotics are in tablet form, she might not want to swallow them - her throat is going to be really really sore. Can you break them up or ask doctor for liquid form?

without them, no idea. it'll only get worse i suppose.

They are in liquid form, it's the banana flavour she's objecting to. Tried all the usual bribes.

can you hide it in a drink/milk/food?

I mix ds's with liquid vitamins (Haliborange) which has a very strong orange taste (which he loves) and that usually does the trick. It only needs a blob of vitamin syrup mixed on the spoon with the antibiotic.

Hope you find something similar she likes, as having tonsillitis is miserable (on my last day of antibiotics myself)

Has she got any lozenges, gargle or similar which would numb the pain. Tonsillitis makes it hard to swallow even liquid so perhaps if it was less painful she might be more compliant. If she doesn't take them it scould get worse and she'll be really miserable then - is she old enough to reason with ?

Oh dear - my DS2 has tonsilitus and an ear infection too - feel like a bad Mummy - he'd been whingey for a few days, but only finally took him to the Dr's today...

How long does it last, anyone? He's normally in Nursery 'cos DH & I work full time. Wonder how long he'll be off (already planning to take tomorrow off with him, by which time he will have had 48 hrs of antibiotics).

dd1 is 6 so old enough to be reasoned with, but just won't be. Have even warned that she might not be well enough for her ballet presentation on Saturday (dear to her heart) with no avail

It depends how bad they have it, as 2 how long it lasts.
You have my sympathy though, it is awfull isn't it?
My ds has been suffering with repeated attacks of tonsillitas since the age of 2 (he is now 5) & is on a waiting list 2 have them out.
Infact this is the longest he has gone between catching another dose (last time was August!)
He is another 1 who does not take the antibiotics & I end up giving up with them!
The stomach pains r something 2 do with the glands being up in their stomach. My ds always complains of his stomach hurting when he has an attack & is sometimes in agony with it.
Lots of calpol & sleep is reccomended, but not nurofen as it irritates the stomach.

Carla, your DD has my sympathy, I have been to the doc's this morniing and I have tonsillitis too, it is really painful, my ears are stinging!

If you do get her to take the antibiotics, try and get her to eat some natural yoghurt as well, or any yoghurt that is live and has acidophilus in it, will stop her potentally getting thrush.

Lots of cool drinks, ice pops, ice cream, and love and cuddles!

I know this is a really daft question, but I thought that it wasn't infectious. Spoke to dd2's classroom assistant today and she said there's a lot of it about

Have a look here It is a generic name for inflammation of the tonsils which could be viral , or in your dd's case, bacterial. The germs which cause it are pretty common, perhaps causing a sore throat, but would not necessarily cause tonsillitis each time. Some people just seems more prone (I get 1 or 2 bouts a year, usually mid winter/spring). I don't think it is one of those things you can consciously avoid.

Carla - he hasn't complained specifically about a sore tummy, but I DID notice him rubbing it yesterday as if it was giving him discomfort.

BlueTeddy - oh dear - we've given him Baby Neurofen too, as it seems to bring his tenperature down better

Don't know if this helps but I used to get TL all the time and the last time I had it badly my GP told me noy yo bother taking antibiotics as it would only speed things up by a day or so. To my shame I cried inthe dr surgery as i was so desperate for it to get better but he just told me to take nurofen and paracetamol alternately every three hours to stop the pain and to dit it out. I was most sceptical but I have to say he ws right. It took about 4 days for the pain to go down and temp to stop and then the usual scratchy thoat for a day or so. Basically, If she won't take the antibiotics don't worry as it will go but may take a day or so longer.

Hope she (and you ) feel better soon.x

I didn't know about the nurofen thing until recently & had been giving it 2 my ds along side the calpol.
It obviously has not done your ds any harm, but it can irritate the stomach & make them more likely to vomit etc, according to my doctor.
My ds is always sick when he gets tonsillitas any way!
Hope your little boy is better soon.
