ds2 has rash all over his tummy and back

Any ideas what this could be? I'm pretty certain it's not a meningitis rash - it goes away with the glass etc, and he is quite smiley and no other symptoms you might associate with that.

He is VERY snotty - bit of a cough, has had a temperature, and has a red cheek (teething?). The rash is all over his tummy and back, and is a blotchy kind of rash. It seems to be spreading fairly quickly - i.e. when I first spotted it, it was on his tummy only, but within an hour or so was over his back as well.

WHat do you think? Could it be measles or rubella? (He's only 10 months, so hasn't been vaccinated yet). AM seeing a GP friend later so she's going to have a look, but wondered if you might have some ideas. Thanks!

Allergic reaction? Slapped cheek syndrome?

Could very well be slapped cheek - that leaves a sort of lacy, blotchy rash, with very red, hot cheeks.

I don't know where you are tortoise, but the pox (ie chicken!) is doing the rounds here in mid Wales - I have my fingers crossed that poor old dd gets it now!

ds3 had scarlet fever before xams, the rash was all over his body and appeared after a cough and cold.

he needed anti-bs to get rid of it.

Oh, have just looked up chicken pox and the red spots seem to blister in a couple of hours, so may not be that.

Ah, netdoctor seems to think that slapped cheek rash is rare on the body - moves from face to arms and legs.

sounds like slapped cheek to me. ds had it at 8 months and was quite poorly , lacy rash was on tummy too.

scarlet fever - 'The tongue has a thick, white coating that peels after four or five days, producing a red strawberry appearance.' Deeeeelightful!!

oh thank you - LTH, I looked up your link, and the symptoms do fit actually. Thanks everyone - I'll see what my friend says as well, but sounds like I should possibly take him to the GP to be on the safe side (if scarlet fever it's notifiable isn't it?).

LTH - how did they diagnose your little one?

Just thought as well, I had a horrible horrible sore throat last weekend - that could be connected couldn't it?

The Gp took one look at the rash and pretty much said scarlet fever striaght away, he could see ds3 was snotty too so gave us anti-bs.


It coul;d be linked to your sore throut becasue thats where the bug lives appaently.

It does sound like ds2. He's not particularly 'ill' as such, but he was very droopy on Tuesday evening, off his food (and yesterday actually). I wonder if it is linked to that sore throat - it was one of those really terrible ones where you feel like a knife is in your throat when you swallow.

ds3 wasn't really ill either, abit clingy and lathargic but nothing to bad. The rash appeared when he perked up abit.


10 course of anti-b were a right faff though...

LTH - that's the same as ds2, he's perked up a bit today, which was why I was quite surprised to see the rash.

DS has had this exact thing twice, both times doc said it was a viral rash... apparently very common in little ones.

He's got the red cheeks too, but that is teething for him.

thanks lapin - that is similar, but his is possibly a little redder and blotchier. Anyway, I'm going to see my GP friend now, so I'll see what she says. Thanks everyone for your advice!

my friend said 'non-specific virus' so, I'll see how he is over the weekend and if he's not right by Monday take him to the GP then. Thanks again for your advice - you've been great!
