What sort of nasties are lurking in raw sewage?

Only I am surrounded by flood water contaminated with raw sewage. It has rained so much the system can't cope (apparently its hydraulic overload so the water man tells me[fascinating emoticon]).

Not sure - we had this too. You have my sympathies. It's horrible. I was pregnant at the time, and had to wade through it, but suffered no ill effects thank goodness.

Wash your hands before you touch anything. Soap and water will be fine as long as you wash them thoroughly. Sing Happy Birthday to yourself as you wash the soap in - that's the recommended time 20 secs. I use to tell my student nurses this - it's longer than you think!! Hope it gets sorted soon

I once had to hold down sewage water, that was coming up a small drain by force, for 2 hours using only a mop during a public holiday when several thousand people were getting drunk outside my shop premises...when it started coming up between the tiles on the floor i gave up.
One of the reasons i use real nappies is the thought of all the raw sewage that gets put into the rubbish every night all across the 'civilised' globe, it ends up in dumps or landfill some of which have water tables under them...
Hope your waters retreat soon mega...

1/3 to 1/2 of all faecal matter is made up of (dead, mostly) E Coli

I was told Yankie Doodle Dandy for the hand washing

(and nelly the elephant for CPR but that is a whole different thread!)

yuk! our drains back up after lots of rain as well. except yesterday it really backed up! and my bath was bubbling stuff up. had to call someone in to look at the drains and the main sewer pipe was blocked 2 houses down.

Grim. It's mostly sorted now but we are at the end of the main sewerage pipe, so if everything backs up, there used to be nowhere for it to go except for bubbling up in our garden, then coming through the front door into our house. We now have a valve that stops that happening, and they've upgraded the pumps at the pumping station.

misdee - our bath is doing that too. I have been given some disinfectant which I have been liberally sloshing. The whole village is backed up. It's always like this after heavy rain and they still want to bulid more houses (rant rant).

since they built the houses over the rd and people moved into them, apparently its been worse.

they have built so many houses in this town and the water system cant cope. our water rpessure is down, they are constantly diggingg up and repairing the same part of pipes at both ends of the street.

when it rains the bath can take over an hour to drain. we were so close to it all spilling into our garden yesterday. the stench was awful when we pulled the cover off.
