Constipation

Never really had constipation before. Feel as if I do need to go, ie feel 'full' in the rectum but unable to push it out.

Is it normal to feel generally listless and run down with poor appetite when constipated? I feel really under the weather today . Not to mention irritable
.
Delightful subject, sorry. Definitely not the poo troll.
Any advice is most welcome.

Hmmm first thought is a MN cliché (apparently) but - have you had thyroid checked? Those are the two main symptoms I get along with brain fog/ forgetfulness/ inability to multitask effectively.

You'll feel full due to the constipation; I do actually lose my appetite when underactive though.

I assume you've tried things like syrup of figs etc?

I have felt listless and just a bit 'meh' with constipation, not run down as such. Depends how long it is since you last went I guess? You've probably tried all the obvious but lots or orange juice and a handful of nuts usually gets things moving for me.

Is it chronic constipation or just the last week or so?

It's just the last week or so.
I've been incredibly busy at work. I've been eating junk (no veg/fruit etc) and had no exercise as I've been pretty much deskbound for 10 hours a day.
The only other time in my life I've been constipated was after having my appendix out 35 years ago.
I don't really know what to do about it but will try to get some syrup of figs/juice and some nuts. I've eaten lentil soup for lunch today, and am planning a large helping of roast veg with supper. Hope something works soon!

As that's probably it.

Pears, syrup of figs, porridge, prunes and plenty of water and I'm sure you'll be ok again!

Right, well I know nobody's awaiting news with bated breath, but I've managed to go!.
It was like passing a grapefruit, awfully painful experience, but I feel tons better now it's out.
Thanks both for the advice. Hopefully it won't happen again.

Don't forget to drink either - try for about a litre of water ( on top of tea/coffee). the soft eating prunes and apricots are good too- just as a snack, maybe 4/5 per day.

Maybe a bit late. But have you tried raising your feet while you sit on the loo? It can help the (ahem) poo move. Something to do with the shape your colon is. Good luck. I hope it doesn't last too long.

Also glycerine suppositories are useful.
