Horrible snotty gunck from DDs ear (9m).....

...should I be worried?

Was just about to put DD3 to bed when I noticed her ear canal was full of snotty, slimy yellowy/greeny gunk. This was most definately not ear wax. She has been fine in herself - no temp, no irritability (but she is the most laidback human being I have ever known). I have cleaned it away with a safety earbud for now and will see if any more accumulates tomorrow.

  1. Should I be worried?
  2. Is this a burst eardrum?
  3. Is there any chance it could be anything else?
  4. Does she need to see GP?
  5. Does she need to be treated?

She has had a slight cough. DTDs have been really poorly with a cough (one was complaining of earache).

She had a bath this evening before I noticed this. Will this be a problem. TBH her ear canal was so blocked up I doubt any water will have penetrated.

I just can't believe she has perferated her eardrum with no indication of pain whatsoever^ - no matter how laid back she is.

My daughter had a perforated ear drum at about 20 months. Took her to the GP when there was a yellowish discharge on her sheet from her ear. I was gobsmacked when it was diagnosed but apparently it is quite common.

It didn't seem to bother her at all, she had been slightly unwell for a day or so but nothing to worry about. She'd had an ear infection, that pressure caused the drum to burst and often that actually helps by relieving the pressure building up behind it. Its then the pus coming out so a course of antibiotics did the trick and she was absolutely fine. Didn't take her swimming for 6 weeks and it just heals up by itself and no further treatment is needed.

So is it necessary for me to see GP?

Of course, you would go yourself wouldn't you if you thought you needed medication?

this happned to ds when he was about 20mths old

i think he got antibiotics for it as the infection causes the ear drum to perforate - i would get it sorted asap

ds has now got speech probs due to the fact that he couldn't hear properly when he was a toddler cos of all the ear infections

DD had this as a baby - turned out to be ear infection. Definitely get it checked with GP - you have to be really careful with baby's ears. Let us know how you get on.

My DS2 had this as a baby. It was a perforated eardrum. It happened during the night and he had cried a bit but I just settled him back down without turning the light on and didn't notice the gunk all over his cot and babygro until the next morning. The doctor said it would not have hurt as children's eardrums are more flexible than adults and burst quite easily (I had the same infection at the same time and was in absolute agony and was upset about the pain DS must have been in and not noticing the burst eardrum straight away). He might just have been saying that to make me feel better for DS of course...

Thanks for the replies.

Went to GP - who couldn't say for sure as there was so much gunk he couldn't see eardrum. He felt that it probably wasn't perforated as that tends to be accompanied by some blood. He felt it was probably an infection given the gunk was green and was torn between treating with Ab or not - as she is so well and happy in herself. In the end he decided that because of the volume & colour of discharge he would treat.

Personally I was quite shocked to see her little ear brimming with pus/mucus/vomit inducing crap.

Sounded like ear infection to me rather than perforated eardrum.
Glad she is on the road to recovery.

Well antibiotics did the trick - cleared it up within 2-3 days. 2 days after finidh Abs its back again so she now has another course of Abs.

GP wants to investigate when he can actually see her eardrum if she gets it a third time

not glue ear is it?

My DD suffered with constant ear infections (although never saw any 'glue' coming out of ears - it continually came out of her nose - def different to snot)

She had grommets at 18 months and has never had any problems since. (she is now nearly 7)

Don't know - hope not . It is the third infection in 9m. DTDs have had an ear infection in their 6yrs.
