Hi,
Dh has severe ear ache in one ear. Started 2 hours ago. He has no other symptoms and no other health problems. I think he should just take painkillers. He's gone to a walk in centre...where there's a 3 hour wait. Is this really necessary?! We are supposed to be going on holiday in an hour!

Thanks
Unsympathetic wife. :-).

I agree with walk in. It might be infected.

Are you going by plane, Op? Flying with an acute ear infection isn't a good idea.

Ear infections are incredibly painful. It might not sound like a big deal but because of the tiny space involved the pain can be immense. Have some sympathy.

So, he went to the walk in...they said it wasn't an infection and they couldn't see anything obvious wrong. They advised him to wait a few days...if still in pain go back to doctors. He is still getting awful pain. Think he will be going back to doctors on Monday. Thanks for everyones advice. :-).

Might be worth going to dentist as well. My ear ache was caused by wisdom tooth.

Hmm I think going on holiday with a child with severe earache is really cruel.

Yes scuttle22, it would be, but it is her DH, so he's a big boy Grin

Sorry, me again. I am really starting to worry about dh. We are waiting for an out of hours appointment. He is in absolute agony. Screaming in pain. I've literally never seen him like this. He is curling up in a ball...biting his lip. Says it's worst pain he has ever had. Could this really just be ear ache? I know ear ache hurts but I didn't know it could be this bad. He's taking pain killers but they make no difference. Pain comes and goes but it's getting more frequent. He is practically crying with the pain. (Never seen him cry with pain before, he usually has very high pain threshold ). Can ear ache caused by something normal like an infection really be that bad?! Am I overreacting?

Yes unfortunately ear pain can be like that-it's horrible and is difficult to control with painkillers. Sometimes if it's a middle ear infection it hurts a lot less when the ear drum bursts (there'll be pus).

What painkillers do you have? Your dh has my sympathies-it's horrible.

My earache can be horrendous when my wisdom teeth play up. The temporal mandibular joint is all linked and wisdom teeth coming through can really effect the ears. Mine was awful in my ears, neck and head, all from a bloody tooth.

Phew! Thanks both. He is taking ibuprofen. Gp has called back and they are able to see him now. :-). Hope they can give him something a bit stronger.

Nothing really helps the pain for me, I dose up on ibuprofen and the 30/500 cocodamol. It just manages to take the edge off. Hope he gets some relief soon.

Poor DH, he has my sympathies ear ache is awful! It's very debilitating and painkillers don't seem to work as well. I hope they see him quickly and give him better pain relief. Hopefully you'll still be able to enjoy some of your holiday

I agree with getting his teeth/mouth checked for infection too. I had a lot of war pain when my wisdom tooth was infected.

CotswoldStrife · 19/06/2016 23:19

Is it just in his ear or is it in any part of his face at all? Infected teeth can be really painful or (trigeminal) neuralgia is excruciating, and not relieved by the kind of painkillers he is taking at the moment.

I hope he finds something to ease the pain soon.

Hi, thanks for all the comments. He has a bad ear infection. So relieved. Was starting to think it was something more serious.
Thanks!

Thanks for the update, sorry he is in such pain but it does almost seem like good news that it is something that can be treated fairly easily! Hope the pain has eased!
