Hi everyone - would really appreciate any advice you may have...
My 11.5 month old DD has had a run of colds & chest infections (since she started with a childminder at the start of October)
we had to take her to the out of hours doc the other saturday Nov 25th and she was given amoxil syrup for a chest infection and one of her ears was showing signs of an ear infection. after 5 days on this she seemed a little better, then last weekend it reappeared - runny nose, cough and sounding a bit chesty. her temperature since last saturday has been all over the place. Tuesday night was the worst - it went up to 40.3 and we were told to take her into the local hospital where the duty GP said she had an ear infection in both sides, very sore throat & bad chest. he prescribed Erythromycin (sp?!) which she has been on for 5 days now (getting it into her is another story!) . to start with we kept her temp down with calpol & nurofen, but after wed her temps settled. then today, just when we thought she was geting better, it went up to 39.9 again, so we've put her back on the calpol/nurofen. What should I do - see the GP again tomorrow, or just see if her body can fight it off without more antibios... anyone had experience recently with these nasty colds that wont go away??? she's actually eating a bit more now, but I'm still worried about her temps yo-yo'ing and know that I shouldnt give nurofen for more than 3 days

many thanks
xx

I probably would take her to the drs, just to be on the safe side, because it is not unknown for ordinary infections to turn a bit nastier. you can always ask if you could wait a day or two before trying another antibiotic.

Poor you, and poor dd. It does sound horrid.

Thanks, yes I'll give the GP a ring tomorrow as I hate seeing her so under the weather. What are peoples thoughts on multiple courses of antibiotics for these things?

I wouldnt be keen. Heavy antibiotics is said to upset the flora in the gut, and can cause candida (yeast) overgrowth, for one thing. Obviously necessary for serious illnesses though.
Is your doctor very keen to prescribe anti-biotics? Mine is not, and will happily wait to see if things improve.

Thank you....
i just took her to the docs as her temp was up all night again and still high today...
he said that she still has signs of ear infection in both ears, but that her chest and breathing seem ok. he said it was prob a virus at this stage since 2 sets of anti-bios hadnt worked, so to concentrate in keeping her temp steady and give her inhalations for the cough/chest. He said to keep on with the calpol/nurofen dosing....
we'll see how she is in a day or two
