Earache help!!

Ok what will help the best to releive DD's earache? She is cuddled up to DH at the moment but keeps howling with pain has had calpol, what other "tricks" can help?

How long ago did she have the calpol? Can you give alternate calpol or liquid ibuprofen every 4 hours? When dd's ear hurts, we find that a heating pad helps - she lies down and puts the sore ear on the pad (which is wrapped in a towel).

Good luck. It's hard when they're so uncomfortable.

Hi Aimsmum - haven't been on the same "ear" threads as you for awhile. Hope your dd has gotten past all her ear infection problems - presumably so since you say "dd used to"?

I don't know how old she is, but any kind of decongestant should help - reduces the pressure and therefore reduces the pain. there used to be something called medised that I think had a decongestant in it. You have to be really careful not to give too much paracetamol, so read all ingredients. Pharmacist could give the best advice.HTH

Aimsmum - glad to hear it! You must be hugely relieved, as you and dd had a very rough time, iirc.

We're doing much better in the ear department too....though dd was complaining a few days ago after swimming. But, at least I know what works to soothe her now - thanks to you, and the advice of a few others - so when it is a problem, it's not nearly so upsetting for either of us.

Thanks for the advice, she is now sleeping on DH, from experience she will wake up screaming at some point through the night.

She had a decongestant and has her little teddy heat pad, with regards to paracetamol and ibuprophen, can you overlap them? Never though about propping up, i will do thqt too.

Hi there,have'nt read all replies but if your little one is 6 months plus you can give nurofen for children ,aka "calprofen" or "ibuprofen".Dose is 2.5mls you can give this alongside calpol.You have my sympathies as dd prone to ear infections and the screaming is awful isnt it? Views differ re use of antibiotics for ear infections but I did end up getting them for dd.Hope your little one is better soon.

I avoid getting anitbiotics if I can, I ended up having to take them every couple of months or so for chest infections. I decided to tough it out a couple of times and I haven't had a serious one for years now, same with my throat.

Thanks good to know that I can overlap, both kids are big for their age and don't seem to last the 4 hours, but don't want to over dose them.

Hi, she slept on and off until about midnight, found some kids ibuprophen and it did the trick. She was at Granny's today and granny says she has been up and down, MIL went to A&E as she had sctratched her eyeball and she got the doctor to check if it was infected, it wasn't just gunky.

Was all sticky this morning and MIL got a bit more out through the day (don't try this yourself she is a paediatric nurse). She is staying at Granny's tonight andgranny is armed with both painkillers so hope she has a good night.

dd appears to have outgrown her ear problems as well (touch wood) - she still goes a bit deaf when she has a cold but the deafness doesn't last as long as it used to and the pain that used to come with it doesn't seem to hang around like before (thank goodness!).
