Hi I went to hospital today to have a cyst removed from my overie and a small amount of endometriosis taken away.

When I saw the registrar after the procedure she told me she wants me to take a three month course of Provera...a hormone to stop my period while I heal.

I'm a bit worried about taking it especially after reading the side effects. My mum had breast cancer a few years ago so I refuse to take the contraceptive pill, theres also a family history of blood clots and I had postnatal depression with my second child...these are all mentioned in the leaflet that came with the tablets.

I did ask the registrar about my concerns and she was very flippant. I explained to her I've not normally got a problem with medications but I got a real thing about hormones it just really worries me.

I'm in my mid 30's and plan on getting pregnant again later this year, ive never had problems conceiving.

Have any of you taken this medication? Were there any side effects? Did any of you refuse it and it made things worse?

I'm really worried I'm going to spoil my chances of getting pregnant but also worried I might increase my chances of cancer or something else!

Any advice please?

Thanks

Sorry to see you didn't get any replies to this - I just found it on advanced search looking for info on provera and endometriosis. I can't answer your questions I'm afraid as I'm considering the same issues; just been prescribed provera for my endometrosis. They prescribed it for me years ago and I decided not to take it because of the potential side effects. My endo is getting worse now though and my GP has persuaded me to take the provera and consider having the mirena coil fitted.

Good luck with whatever you decide, I understand your concerns!

Shame she was flippant. I wouldn't take it, either.

Well I've been taking it since Thursday and so far it's turned me into a raging fucking psycho bitch from hell (more so than usual Wink).

I was due on a day or two ago but it's stopped by spotting and I haven't come on yet (am regular as clockwork) so now I'm just paused in prementrual rage hell. Is this how it's going to be ffs?? Confused

I took it three times for 5 days each, to jump-start my periods.
I was nervous as my hormones and moods are erratic to start with. It was fine except for a couple days when my sex drive went through the roof, as in having to sit on my hands to stop myself groping 90% of fellow commuters.

The subsequent times I was prepared so it wasn't so hard to deal with. And no symptoms after stopping, so maybe try it and then stop if it affects you too badly?
