my friend had her baby a week ago and is now in intensive care!

spoke to her hubby today and im shocked by what he told me!

my mate had a caeserian (sp) last wednesday and on monday night she had bad pains so went to hospital. was told she had an infection but it turns out that a piece of plancenta was left in her! she was in theatre for 5hours as they couldnt stop her bleeding she had 6litres of blood, a hysterectomy, part of her bowel removed and as her hubby put it "they had a tinker with her kidneys" too.

unbelievable, how on earth can you miss a piece of bloody placenta with a caeserian. must be easier to remove it all surely when you can put your hand in her and feel for things.i know that sounds gross but seems feasible to me.

shes in intensive care for another 24hours then to a high dependance unit and her baby boy is being cared for by his daddy.

very sad that she could have died

That is pretty shocking.

Sorry to hear this and sincerely hope your friend is on the mend very soon and back with her baby where she should be.

would the placenta not pass vaginally, maybe thats a stupid question?

I hope she gets better.

Feel sorry for her little boy and husband.

Must be horrible to miss the first part of your ds life. Let alone the cesearean.

Christ just horrible situation.

oh no I really hope your friend has a speedy recovery from now on so she can start to enjoy her lovely little boy . This must be really tough on her husband too. Best wishes to all of them.

what a horrible experience for your friend and her family.....just bloomin glad for them all that eventually the health service appear to have gotten it right and have fixed their error in time.

That's truly shocking, and how terrible that she had to have a hysterectomy. Hope your friend makes a quick recovery and can enjoy her baby boy. xxx

allie,shes not allowed visitors in intensive care, ive said il phone her hubby on friday when she should be on the special ward. i wouldnt want to intrude when shes so sick, especially with the new baby.

i told her hubby id keep in touch by phone and visit her when she comes home.

That is awful, I am very sorry for your friend .

I remember when I was having my caesarean the doctors were very concerned that they couldn't find a piece of the placenta - it was only at the last minute that they found it, I think it had slipped down out of sight. They should be checking very carefully that they have removed the whole placenta - I wonder if she would have a case for negligence against the doctors who performed the operation. I hope your friend recovers soon.

I second what merrily says. The surgeon who did the c-section should have checked very carefully that the whole placenta was there.

I had a section for placenta praevia and after my dd was born I was aware that the consultant and his assistant (or someone???) was poring over something on a table somewhere else in the theatre. Basically it was my placenta, and they were worried because 'a small lobe' was missing. I was told to tell the midwives immediately if I had any pain (internal, rather than from the wound) or discharge or noticed any smell (sorry if TMI). Anyway, nothing happened and it's likely that I lost the bit of placenta earlier when I had bled quite a lot. But I assumed from my experience that they checked the placenta very very carefully for this very reason. Sounds a bit as if your friend might have a case for negligence....

Anyway, I really hope that she is OK and that she's soon back home with her ds.
