Migranes- is this normal?

Hi

I don't usually get migraines, but last night I had an awful headache and a feeling all over my body sort of weakness. I couldn't stand light, or to look at screens, and went to bed, feeling sick/ heaving. Then I woke up after 2 hours, vomiting until I couldn't even drink water. I had an upset tummy too (without much warning, couldn't get to the loo in time once, though I think was exhaustion by that point). By the end, I couldn't keep down water. Today, I was so tired, I skipped a lecture and slept instead. I was up and about with DD, and did a bit of reading. Even as I was sleeping, halfway between sleeping and being awake, I still had a headache. Couldn't concentrate much either. I managed to eat a little bit of toast and fruit though. And drink rehydration drinks and fruit juice. Just wondering if this was actually a migraine, or a bug instead? I thought it might have been due to stress. I'm a final year student with a lot of work to do in a very short space of time!

It does sound more like a bug if you had the runs too. I've only ever had just nausea & vomiting with a migraine. I find the headache is usually on one side usually behind my eye.

I still feel rough, stomach aching, headache above one eye and all shaky. My lips were wobbling as though I was going to be sick earlier, although I did manage to get to a class and DD's parents evening. I'm a lone parent, too, with very little help, so finding it very hard. I'm absolutely exhausted. And cold, freezing cold. Have booked in for a massage tomorrow morning, but see how I feel, and if my symptoms ease off a bit first.

You should see your GP.

I agree that you should be seeing your doctor , also, if you do have a bug and even if your symptoms have eased it wouldn't be fair in my opinion to go and have a massage as you'll more than likely pass it to someone else.

Yeah, I thought that, was going to cancel. I wasn't sure to go and see GP if it was a bug, though. I don't know if it's just stress. Really don't like being so poorly.

I suffer with migraine and have had all the symptoms you describe but never with diarrhoea. It is possible that you have a virus and the migraine is part of that - I had a flu-type bug a few years ago which started with an awful migraine. From what you describe, you sound a bit better today than you were in the night, so I would see how you go. Often with these viral illnesses you can be better in a few days. I suspect feeling so stressed has contributed to you catching something.

Hope you feel better soon, it is horrible being ill.

My stomach gets a migraine with the rest of me, don't worry! D+V is part of my migraine joy in about 50% of episodes. Rest up, stay out of bright light and get well soon!

me too...not often, but if it's a "wake up with migraine", then it's usually a dash to the bathroom and I sit there for a bit with a bowl on my lap.

glad you asked, now you have that picture in your mind?

Had one today, but that was just banging head, vomiting and visual probs. I took to my bed only to be woken by my super sense of smell detecting dh's deodorant right up my nose from the bathroom down stairs. Still have a bit of a head but that is down to a dull roar now.

Katkins1 · 05/03/2014 20:25

Thanks for the replies. I did have a super sense of smell just before, and then after this morning (I was up all night Monday). So much so that I shampooed the carpet, and have ruined my vacuum cleaning it as it was still wet (wasn't in the right mind, got to be honest). It started with a banging headache, then progressed to other symptoms. Still feel a bit spaced out. One of my eyes 'twitches' as well.

I can eat little bits, but my stomach is still really sore, and swollen. I've txt to cancel my booking, well re-arrange, because if it is a bug I don't want to pass it on, and I don't think I could bear be touched when my tummy is tender. It hurts on one side too, and my head is still so tender. I can visual that, catsmama. Wasn't too far off myself; and I had to clean everything up myself, which made me even more sick! Not that I'd ask anyone else to do it, but you get the picture.

Are they meant to last more than a few days, and is there anything I can take for it? Only ever had once before, and it quickly went.

Migraines can last for a few days - have you taken anything for it yet? Migraleve tablets are good - you have to ask for them at the pharmacy. You can take paracetamol which may help a little if the worst of the head has passed and it won't upset your stomach further.

It might sound strange but what always settles my stomach and head after a migraine is to eat something stodgy - toast, cereal or pasta. Even if I still feel sick, it takes the nausea off.

Katkins1 · 05/03/2014 20:42

Thank you. I can't take paracetomel, but am considering taking some more Nurofen ones. I left quite early today, (7.30am), and had some before, so might take some more in a bit.

If you had them at 7.30am then you can definitely have more now - I would try and eat something small though before you take them so they don't upset your stomach further - a small piece of bread for instance.

You say your stomach is swollen? This could be due to emptiness. If you were sick on Monday night and have hardly eaten anything since, you must be very empty. Do you feel hungry?

Katkins1 · 05/03/2014 21:49

I've had a bit to eat. That's the strange thing, not particularly bothered about food, more drinking. I just want to drink loads and loads.

Go to the GP. It's probably a migraine or a bug but it really won't cost anything to get checked out.

Thanks, I think I will, especially as its the first time that I've had it. Am crying and feeling sorry for myself now!

It sounds like it could be migraine - I used to just get a headache but now I typically get sickness & upset tummy as well. I always know it's a migraine rather than a bug because I can smell everything much more strongly - petrol fumes and perfume are big triggers for me, along with hormones and changes in atmospheric pressure. Usually get them around the end of my period.

Hope you feel better today - the after effects can last for a few days Sad

I'm a lone parent too and I usually find myself texting with my head in sick bowl trying to find someone to take DS to / from school etc

I've been nursing this one since friday tbh

and thinking about it, possibly the previous thursday....I woke on the friday with a headache but fended it off in an hour or so, but haven't been sleeping well and been feeling odd since then
This friday just past I woke again with a headache, that took till lunchtime to go and dh and I were off for the weekend, it seemed to be gone, but still not sleeping properly although I often don't in a hotel.

Anyhoo, wednesday I couldn't shift it, had nausea, banging head, couldn't face my coffee, and despite painkillers my vision went wobbly and then the vomiting started.

it's gone now though!! :D I feel brighter, lighter, I can see properly and think straight.

I really must go to the quack and get something sorted, am sure it's hormonal and I have tried immigran with limited success due to the vomming.

Can you try and pinpoint any triggers? Or patterns? Being over tired is certainly one of mine, along with hormones atm.

Very bright light/sunshine reflections will often set me off too, but usually that is only the visuals and the headache. It's so annoying and mostly I end up being cross with myself for not seeing it coming and thinking "it's just a headache" when it really is building up to a BIG event.

Dh can often see them coming....I should pay more attention when he asks if I am alright....cos I usually am not, but am carrying on like a brave soldier so as not to give in.

It's certainly worth going to the doc to see if they can offer anything....i just am a doctor avoider, but i should go and get it sorted again.

I feel a lot better, thank you. A bit emotional, bit sort of, serene and peaceful. I managed to get some typing and reading done, though I did feel a bit sick and wobbly. My sense of smell is still really strong, too.I think it's stress related, as I'm a final year student with hand ins all in May. And I'm struggling to keep on top of things at the moment.

I lost my Grandfather a couple of months ago, and that's been quite difficult. I am really sensitive to light anyway. I wear sunglasses quite a bit, if I can. No-one bats an eyelid, because I'm an odd creature, anyway.

I've had headaches where I've been heaving before, but the vomiting was absolutely horrendous. Every two hours for an entire night. In the end, I was throwing up bile and couldn't even drink. I don't think that it helped I was alone, in pain and really scared, because I'd not experienced anything like it before.

My stomach still really hurts from being sick, it was quite violent. I do think I need to see the Doctor.

they really do sound like migraines to me, particularly the bile and violent vomiting....I never know if it is more violent than normal or just cos there is nothing to bring up

I have sooooo many pairs of sunspecs, often get caught out with a sunny day and then have to go buy some!

Hope you are better properly today.

Thank you. I am feeling a lot better- my energy levels are returning. I didn't realise at the time, but I was due on, started today.

Last few months I've had lots of changes with my periods, everything from feeling sick to really, really heavy flow where I've had to change all of my clothes. I think a trip to the GP is in order...

It's worth getting a migraine diagnosis officially. I've never managed to get round to it and feel a knob every time I have one.

Hope you feel better soon. Really do go and be seen, you don't have to put up with it.

I will. I feel absolutely drained and emotionally depleted. As though I can't actually do anymore. I think this might be the after effects, mixed with a bit of depression.

You sound like you're having a horrible time of it.

I do get a migraine "hangover" which is always like a massive kick in the teeth. Once I couldn't string a sentence together for two weeks, another time I thought I knew EVERYBODY that I saw, properly 'recognised' their faces. Mostly it manifests as being drained, sad and bone-weary.

You should get a thorough MOT from your GP. Check iron levels etc, ask for something for your periods etc.

Yeah I said that to my friend today. I was saying a while back that I needed a blood test, but just thought the changes were due to getting that little bit older, and my body changing (fat distribution that sort of thing!). I'm only young, but at the getting toward 30 stage, if that makes sense. Oh, the recognising people! I thought I was going out of my mind!

I've not been able to get as far with my work as I would have liked, either, which I'm disappointed with. I spent 2 days getting together one theory section and re-structuring what I already had. Then by the time I'd done bath, bed and ordered groceries tonight it was past 9 and I was exhausted. My whole body is drained. It's frustrating loosing time to something like that when time is not on your side. I'm only 2 days post throwing up though, so hopefully it will pass- and soon. The uni have said because of my depression when I get a doctor's note, I will be granted an extension for my assignments.
