Impetigo or not, more antibiotics?

Ds 2.2 has been diagnosed by GP as having impetigo. First we used an antibiotic cream which didn't work then a 7 day course of liquid anti-biotics (first time ever) which didn't work, then a 7 day course of a different liquid anti-biotic, which seemed to be work but now it looks like it's flaring up agian. I've been looking at images of impetigo (yuk)and my DS's condition looks different, he has it on his groin, his bottom and under one armpit. And it is more like a red patch with little spots on it that boils, I've boil washed his bedding and being very clean, back to doctor in morning, worried about giving him more anti-biotics in case these don't work...worried, any on got experience in this

DD had impetigo a few months ago - started on her inner thigh but had spread to her other thigh and her back by the time we saw the GP and got a diagnosis. Was presribed Bactroban ointment & oral antibiotics and it cleared up within a week. A couple of weeks later a suspicious-looking spot appeared and we immediately treated it with the Bactroban and it went away again for good. We were also advised to keep her nails very short to keep her from scratching it and to use lots of antibacterial handwash to stop it spreading.

Hers was an angry red patch with a kind of honey coloured crust over (sorry if TMI!) and lots of little red crusty spots surrounding it.

Don't know if any of that helps.

ok thanks, off to see the Doc this morning, will ask about using bactroban for flare ups, as it definately isn't as bad as the first time but don't want to risk it getting that way, horrible thing isn't it. I'm in the southern hemisphere hence the time lapse..

DD was treated for impetigo on her lip on several occassions for over 2 or 3 years. On the last visit to the DR, they said it looked more like a coldsore so they gave treatment for that instead and (touch wood) its never came back!

well GP says it doesn't look like impetigo to her either, they call it school sores here, so maybe locum I saw was mistaken. She thinks maybe it's just from lack of air to the skin, after emigrating and doing two winters back to back this is possible. Also stress can affect the skin and to be honest he's pretty stressed out from being given two lots of anti-b's and all this constant hand washing a cleaning him, as I thought he had a staph infection, he hates me fussing over him! We're going to give it a few days using a zinc based heavy duty barrier cream ( I only use natural products usually) and more nappy off time, which I haven't been doing as I didn't want the staph infection to spread. if it is still sore she wants to try treating it as fungal infection with anti-fungal cream. It's confusing having a misdiagnosis isn't it!
