wanted singles, given mmr, worried

We were planning on singles for ds (13 months). This is now the second time an appointment for the single measles - planned well in advance - has not happened due to non-availability of the vaccine (we are in Germany btw) - we've tried to get hold of it all over the place, latest failure was Doc Morris who cancelled our order without telling us (we found out by looking at order status) and said they needed a different kind of prescription. Tbh we started despairing of getting hold of it, and it would have been been even more difficult with the mumps and rubella. Anyway, we talked about it again and decided to give MMR - especially dh is uncomfortable with not vaccinating, and the possible risk factors for ds do seem very small (I have had isolated incidents of IBS and psoriasis at a very stressful time in my life. There is no indication of allergy, bad reactions to other vax or gut problems in ds). ds had it an hour ago. And guess what, I'm now utterly miserable, with the 'what if' and 'I'll never forgive myself if' going round my head.
Please no arguments... just so my position's clear, I'm basically pro-vax (but with sympathy for a lot of anti-vax arguments) but do believe there may be a risk with MMR in a small minority of children - a risk which might not be completely eliminated with singles - who knows. Just want to be reassured really. When do I know nothing's happened and he'll be OK?
Going to go offline for a bit (bedtime etc) but will be back later this evening. TIA.

You must feel crappy having reassured yourself you'd be getting singles and then get the mmr!

Please try and relax - there's no evidence at all that there could be any serious complications. DS (who is now 19 months) had mmr at 14 months. He was a bit grumpy the day after and that was it. Some kids can have a mild fever up to a week later but calpol will be enough to sort them out.

As always though if you're worried call a doctor as it might not be related.

Foundintranslation, just think how great it is that your ds is now better protected from all the horrible things that can happen with M, M & R.

My dd had her MMR the other week, and with measles outbreaks not too far from us plus mumps among my students, I'm fairly confident I've backed the right horse.

Thank you all. ds currently charging round - forget bedtime - temp seems normal.
Quick bump.

If you're really worried and want to do something harmless that would help then give a couple of doses of cod liver oil and some probiotics. I wouldn't carry on with cod liver oil for too long though, but a little extra vitamin A is useful when dealing with the measles virus.

Honestly don't stress about it, the risks are small, same as for any vaccination. If there is a bad reaction, they are major and shortly after the jab so don't stay jittery for ages. If you see a rash in a few weeks take it as a good sign- it means its worked.

I know how you feel though, I would like to give ds2 and ds3 tetanus, but there is no single jab available for under 10's so they remain untetanused. I occasionally have mega panics.... Nightmare when you can't take the route you want to take.

Oh timing- the person I know whose son was left seriously damaged after the MMR had his seizures I think within 24 hours, definitely within 48. The regression in the MMR damaged cases is always described as rapid, and from general chit chat to friends starts very very soon after the MMR, and is accompanied by very serious bowel problems (that last months). I get the impression the bowel problems start within days.

There are more accurate descriptions around somewhere -but buggered if I can find them.

Anyway- it's rapid.

Thanks jimjams. This whole getting-singles thing was turning into a nightmare - one week we'd get told one thing, the next something else entirely. Here people either vaccinate like mad and go for all the extras or don't vaccinate at all.

I've got that impression from German friends

2 days on, ds has been fine, not so much as a temperature. However, I've just changed his pooey nappy and there is some reddish stuff in there. If it's blood is that a sign it could have caused bowel problems? (The poo itself is normal) Bit worried again now. Thanks.

(can't really tell what it is as it's sunk into the nappy. Sorry TMI)
