Nosey question: Has anyone been sterilized??

Hi. Sorry if this is a personal question, but I was just wondering about the sterilisation process. I have spoken to the doctor about being sterilised and have my pre-op appointment in a couple of weeks, then I will have surgery.

I know all about the operation. I am just wondering how sore I will be afterwards, and how much will I be able to move around. Should I plan to stay in bed for a few days, or will I be fine after a day or two? The doctor gave me the clinical answers to these questions, but didn't look at it from the point of view of a woman with two toddlers.

My husband is also wondering how much time he will need off work as he will needs to mention it to his boss, as the op will be beginning of August, after dd finishes nursery for the summer.

I just want some advice on how this will affect me afterwards.

Hello. I am also interested as well. I have been toying with it. adozenroses, do you mind me asking how old you are? Did you have any problem getting refered for the op? Do you know how long the waiting list is, asuming you are having this done on the NHS? Many thanks.

I've had it done. Happen to be my 30th birthday.
It was a day case so went in,in the morning and out by tea time.
I don't really being in much discomfort although the anasthetic made me very sleepy on the night time too.
I had my two looked after for that night and the day after. (4yrs and 6 months) It's done by key hole so not that bad.
Hope this helps.

That sounds really great. I was just worried about being in a lot of pain, but a day or two doesn't sound bad at allSmile

Joceybean> I am 28, and the doctor didn't hesitate referring me. The waiting list is 4-5 weeks. I had a choice of which hospital to attend, and I chose the one with the shortest waiting list!!

I have been thinking about getting sterilized for a while now. Dh would have got a vasectomy, but he was too nervous - and I am totally convinced that I do not want any more kids. I sat and chatted to my mum about it all, and looked at the pros and cons for everything, and I decided that I am doing this for myself. If dh and I split up, he may meet someone else and have more kids, I know that no matter what happens in the future, I do not want any more kids.

I can't use the pill due to a breast lump becoming estrogen(sp!) dependent, and we are using condoms at the moment, due to me suffering a miscarriage on the coil a few months agoShockso I am looking forward to this operationSmile

SOrry, think I waffled a lot thereBlushGrin

It sounds really straight foreward then. I am 36 with 2 children so I guess I would qualify on age but I have not suffered from any problems with other contraception so my reasons would be that I know I don't want any more children and It wold be a fail safe contraception. I am amazed you only have to wait 4-5 weeks. I think I might give this some serious thought. Thanks for the information adozenredroses and good luck with the op. Will watch this post with interest.

Me. I was 37 and was even 'done' at the time of the birth (by c section) of my second child.

I was quite sure that I never wanted to me pg again....two kids were all that I wanted. I had lousy pregnancies and was 37.

dh went back to work after a week, and I'd had a section as well. I had no worries and it was an excellent decision for me

There is one way, you don't have to have any time off and it's painless (for you), it's called a vasectomy. You've been through pregnancy and childbirth, it's nothing like as big an op as female sterilisation and it's only fair.

Exactly the same as MB,'cept I had it done at my third section,I was 33.
They even brought my tubes out in a little pot for me to look at in recovery.Looked like two wee prawns.

I remember being shown my tonsils after they were removed and just wondered why on earth they thought I would want to see them!

Thinking about this here as well as contraception has become a real issue for me & I know I don't want any more kids. Plus a vasectomy for DH might not be a simple outpatient procedure as his anatomy is slightly weird! Anyway, what I want to know is if there's a way to have it done without a general anaesthetic. The only other thing I remember from my tonsil op was being violently sick for days as a reaction to the anaesthesia. Does anyone know?
