Is it normal for babies to be always ill?

Hi

Not sure if I'm being over worrying but my son is always ill. He is 14 months old and is at nursery three days a week. He has a contstant cold, has had tonsilitis 4 times, bronchiolitis and various viral infections. In fact I can't remember when he was free of any illness.

I know that it is common for children to get things but all my friend's children don;t seem to have had as many illnesses as he has had.

Do you think this is normal or should I get a referral to see a doctor to investigate? Any advice would be much appreciated.

the problem is once they have something they are suseptable(sp) to something else iyswim/1
My Ds seems to have been off it since christmas hen he had a really bad sickness bug and just hasnt bounced back,ha coughs and colds and chicken pox since.
A break from nursery could break the cycle?!

It's normal from what I remember with ds1. As a matter of fact, I am sure it was worse for ds2 as he caught everything from ds 1 when he started nursery school 3 months after he was born. Poor thing was ALWAYS with a runny nose, cough, diarrohea, conjunctivitus or some other ailment.

You will be really glad to hear that this year, both of my boys have hardly been ill at all..just run of the mill sniffles and 1 chest infection for the youngest.

all mine were breastfed.
DS1 has hayfever excema acne had glueear and food alergies!
DD seams ok
DS2 had a few reactions to stuff, and wears glasses
DS3 been ill since chistmas
DS4 seems ok apart from mild egg allergy

Goodness knows what would have happened if they were bottle fed!!! :)

Similar to Auntymandy, both of mine were/are breastfed.

DS1, only breastfed for 4 months, pretty much healthy apart from the odd ear infection

DS2, has a multitude of health problems including eczema & food allergies, lol! He is still breastfed now.

Hi

Thanks for all your replies. Yes the ironic thing is that I purely breastfed until he was 7 months old and it seems that it has not helped in the slightest! The only consolation is that he is quite a robust baby (I hate to use the word fat) and he apears to be quite strong.

I am at work full time and my husband does shifts so he is nursery for 3 / 5 days a week. We try and keep him off as much as possible when he is ill and our mother-in-law is a complete star and tries to look after him when she can. It's hard though since we can't afford for me not to work.

I'm hoping that he will grow out of it with age like you say, heartmum2jamie.

HI, I am online today to try and find out if its just my 2yr old or if anyone else out there has a toddler with constant coughing. He is in full time nursery and has had a persistent cough ever since he joined. The GP says, 'its a virus, watch it and if it get worse bring him back' WHAT! worse than constant hacking, chesty cough, green runny nose and sleepless nights? I just don't know what the magic criteria is to get treatment. Has anyone heard of an 9 month virus? Shock

newtoallthis, I remember it took about a year of nursery before the illnesses calmed down. Once their immunity software has been "updated", you will find it much better. Dd (touch wood) hardly gets sick anymore, although she seems to have a permanent runny nose (could be teething though).
