DD almost 4- keeps wetting herself!!

Hiya,

Have posted about this on behaviour/developement, but thought i'd give it a go here (apologies if you've already read it).

My little girl is nearly four. She has been toilet trained since August and I have never had any problems with her. She never even wet the bed.

A couple of months ago, however, she had a water infection. She was on antibiotics for a couple of weeks. During this time she did have episodes where she wet herself.

Over the last few weeks she has been wetting herself again, and it seems to be becoming more frequent.

She is getting quite upset about it (so am I). I constantly sit her down and explain the importance of her not holding her wee in. and that she must go as soon as she needs too. But i'm not even sure that she realises she is weeing until it's going down her leg.

Could this be the infection come back, or is it that she just might be too busy to get to the toilet. Am really not sure how to handle this, as I hate wasting the doc's time.

Any advice or past experience would be great. Thanx

You need to test to be sure. Get a urine sample off to the doc asap so you can eliminate a recurrence of the UTI as a possibility. They will not mind, and you are not wasting their time. Untreated UTIs can be nasty.

yes I agree with jan. Doctors generally take urine infections seriously - definitely book an appointment for them to see her. Given that she's had one before, they may well even start the antibs before the test has come back if they think there's a possibility that she has one again.

I reiterate what Jan and fox have said - def. sounds like could be a UTI - sometimes they don't clear up with first set of antibiotics. This happened to my friend's dd with identical patter of behaviour. They just gave her stronger antibiotics and it cleared up.

My dd (3 yrs) has just been in to hospital to have her kidneys scanned, because she had a UTI in december. If they have not referred her for an appointment with a consultant, get her refferred now. She should also have been put on a low dose antibiotic until any kidney problems have been ruled out. Go & bang on the table until you get all this!!

I hope I am not scaring you. It is unlikely that there are any kidney problems but it does sound as if the previous UTI has not cleared up. Get an appointment tomorrow. Smile

dont jump in feet first with the antibiotics.
The kidneys are very susepatble to scarring before the age of 2, but your wee on is 4. Additionally urine infections in babies are more indicative of reflux or underlying problems as babies have no bladder control and hygiene is taken care of by you.
In a older child there are other explainations for cause of UTI, which can be ruled out before you think about a low dose antibiotic.
I would have her urine tested again and if she has a second infection then push for a scan

HTH

just realised my post was a bit confusing, by all means antibiotics for an infection, but no as a low dose untill definative treatment if you see what I mean!
