Can anyone tell me about symptoms and treatment?

This is the leaflet most GPs would give you.

I took amitryptiline when I had it which did help - but leaves you a bit spaced out to start with.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Thank you Milliways. I am not sure if it is that, it was just a possible diagnosis of my symptoms, so fingers crossed. I think there is something going off in my mouth/gums though, which may cause the nerve response.

Symptoms... excruciating pain:( One sided usually (tho it can become bilateral)
Mine was the branch of the trigeminal nerve that went along the bottom teeth, and in my case had burning pain with intermittent shocks.

I lost two healthy teeth before the docs figured out that it wasn't a tooth problem:(

I was first put on Tegretol , but that made me sick, then Gabapentin on massive doses which thankfully did the job and took away the pain. Normal pain killers don't work for nerve pain.
It IS treatable:)

My nan has this, she used to take tegretol but that stopped working so effectively for her and she's now on pregabalin which works well for her. Hope you find something that helps you soon.

I have recently been diagnosed with Trigeminal neuralgia.. Was quite shocked reading the leaflet as i am well below the usual age. I've had excrutiating pain on the right side of my face and unluckily it has affected all 3 branches of the nerve. I was put on carbamazapine (tegretol) but reacted badly after only day 2 days on i still have the effects of that. Im currently taking gabapentin which has helped. There are a few other drugs that they can prescribe dont be alarmed that they say that they are for epilepsy many of them are used for this too. As Medusa said pain killers dont work. I thought i had sinusitus so was taking painkillers and decongestants only went doctors after they werent working and I'd had several nights where it stopped me from sleeping. Hope your sorted soon as it is awful.

Thanks for all your helpful info everyone. I am still in some pain, but it seems it is dental, possibly a crack in my tooth. Not sure yet what is to be done, some of the pain has settled though, so not trigeminal.
Shellylou, I do hope yours gets sorted, it is excruciating pain.

it does come and go. Apparently constant pain isnt part of trigeminal. After myy first bout of it i was ok for about a week before i had another unfortunately when i finally got a night out lol. Will be goibng back to doctors at some point soon if it carries on and asking for tests etc
