Nose suddenly started to bleed???

My 3 yr old was eating dinner and her nose suddenly started to bleed out of one nostril but I noticed a bloody bogie scab in the other nostril. I know she did not bang her nose today but did run into her friends head on Monday - she id not have a nose bleed then, surely that would not make her nose bleed this evening???

What could have caused it?

How can you make a three year old stay still and pinch the nose for 10 mins as FIRST AID books suggest???

It can be caused by a virus, which is very common, but some people are more suceptible than others.

2 of my children are very suceptible, they will break out in fountains of blood for no apparent reason. It goes in phases, we have several weeks of constant bleeds, then none for ages. The good news is that they do grow out of it by the time they are adults.
Also, it usually stops by itself. Ive only ever had to do the 10 minutes thing a couple of times.

The first time it happened at school, dd's poor teacher was frantic, dd was sitting in a pool of blood perfectly calm just asking for a hanky!

Not easy.
Stuffing tissue up their nose works
Not exactly first aid, but it does work...
High blood pressure cancause.
Funnily enough my DH sometimes gets it if we have high pressure (weather)

Is it a big bleed or a tiny bleed?

It could be a mix of the bump on Monday, and dry air, from it being so cold.

Hello

Thanks for your replies.

She seems to be fine now well was when she was bleeding - did not bother her. It was not a big bleed anyway.

No bleeds today so maybe it was a wandering finger :)
