Bone formation in hip joints at 12 months

Due to dd being in a funny position at birth she was referred for a hip scan at 5 weeks and as her socket depth was borderline she was referred to 10 weeks and then again to 6 months and we had another appointment today at 12 months. All looked fine apparently until they looked at the xray which showed there was hardly any bone formation yet round the hip joints. She said she would expect to be able to see it so we have been referred for another xray at 18 months.

Just wondered if anyone knew anything about this or had any experience of this ? Am assuming that, as no action is being taken, and that she is almost walking, it can't be too serious but it doesn't stop me worrying !!

Hi Hazellnut - not my area of expertise at all I'm afraid. Have picked DHs brains - he doesn't know much more but thinks that this sounds at the mild end of the spectrum of hip problems and that these types tend to get better on their own - he reckons if dd is starting to walk that's a pretty good sign. HTH.

Happy birthday to dd for tomorrow!!!

Thanks (to both you and your dh !) - Doctors are scarey people .... my mind always goes blank when I'm in there and then I think of all the questions I should have asked when I get out.....

dd doesn't seem to think she has problems so I guess we'll just go with that and worry about it in 6 months time if we need to !!

Both ds and dd had hip problems when born. They both had a number of scans and when 12 months x-rays as well. I remember being shown on the scan when one had the first bit of bone forming. I had no idea it wasn't bone before this but apparently it is cartilage until bone forms. It started as a tiny dot of white in the middle, but i can't remember how old they were when this first appeared. I would imagine that there's very little to worry about as they're leaving it for six months before next x-ray.

Thanks Justmummy - that's it - yuo can just see it starting to form on the x-ray so will just have hope she is just a slow developer !! We did ask if it could be related to the fact her teeth have been quite slow and they said it could. thanks for the reply.

we were advised to up the amount of calcium in dd's diet(at around 7 months)at every opportunity to help the bone growth after dd had a closed hip reduction at 4 months and was in cast for 8 months and a harness for a further 4 months.
good luck xx

my dd was born with two dislocated hips and was in a harness from one week old to about 4 months. The hospital were always really good with the check ups and if they left your dd another 6 months, they can't be too worried about it. If you are still worried you can always ring the hospital and ask to have a chat to one of the consultants about it. Hope everything is ok!

thanks Chatee and Hanjan - I think we have decided to fill her full of calcium over the next 6 months and hope it is all ok. As you say Hanjan, if it was serious they wouldn't let it go 6 months. Thanks for your advice !
