Alternatives to Antibiotics - new thread cause I'm at work

I'm sure I did a new thread about this already, but it's gone. I'm at work and cannot post on the original thread because of the highly sensitive blockage they have on their pcs.

So just to update, took dd to docs after she complained of pains down there when she went to the toilet and sometimes when she didn't. She's been having a bit of trouble down there on and off for a couple of months so I decide it's time to see a doctor. I go to a different doctor after trouble with the last one and ds. He looks at her down there, feels and listens to her tummy and announces that she has an infection. He prescribes strong antibiotics for her. I don't really agree with the diagnoses, especially since he didn't take a urine sample from her.

Soooo, I get a urine sample, take it to the lab, after frantic posting on here and being reassured by the ever helpful Mumsnet! The results came back and she has no infection! I'm relieved but also outraged that antibiotics are just being prescribed by negligent doctors as the answer to everything!

Still don't know what is wrong with dd, suspect perhaps washing powder or soap irritating her. But I won't be taking my kids to see the doctors here again, I've lost all confidence in them.

Hi Rhubarb,
Great news that the urine test was clear and am quite on oyur behalf about the antibiotics especially something as strong as augmentin. No wonder there is so much MRSA around when docs prescribe powerful antibiotics innapropriately (this is a massive bug bear of mine!!!!).
Hope your dd is well & it all just settles down - as you say it could easily just be irritation due to soap powder.

excellent news rhubarb - glad you got the sample done

If you remember from the other thread, dd (age 5) had problems with vagina soreness - this is what we (i.e. me and GP's plan!) did to try and sort it out

  1. Got a massive tub of aqueous cream from the GP and rubbed on and around the outer lips of the vagina (where you can see it is red)
  2. Absolutely no soap or bubble bath at bath time (i.e. no soap anywhere near the water that she was bathing in)
  3. Changed washing powders (you may have to do this a fair few times till you get one that you think is working)
  4. Threw away all her old knickers and bought her new ones that were a size bigger (have a feeling some of the old ones were a bit too tight)

Also, conincidentally, she was treated for worms as her brother had them (and I'm sure she had them as well). Worms can make girl's vaginas sore and I think they definitely had an effect on dd. Hope some of that helps and glad you didn't need to take the antibs.

Hi Ladies, I took my tiny baby to the docs for a skin complaint which turned out to be just baby acne. Doc said she couldn't remember the name of the condition but that I could have steroids or antibiots if I wanted them. Needless to say I told her what she could do with them and went to see my homeopath who was brill thru my pregnancy and has given me some excellent advice about lots of things. Might be worth a visit if your dd's problem persists Rhubarb?

Rhubarb, could she possibly have threadworms? I remember your OP and since then dd had a mild VD and some discomfort, so I took her to the GP and that was the first thing she asked about and told me to check. The worms can apparently crawl as far as the labia and cause irritation and discharge (what a gross-out).
