Eye Infection, Playgroup party tomorrow, would you go

I have 2 dd's and its a christmas party tomorrow. Typical but the youngest one has a runny eye and its a bit swollen. Its a clear discharge, cleaning it with water and putting over the counter eye drops in. The problem is that we have a party for both dd's to go to tomorrow. I dont want the oldest one to miss it, so just dont know what to do. Would you go if one of your children had it.

I understood that conjuctivitis was a horrible green discharge, she certainly hasnt got that at the moment.

Just want advice on if I should go or not.

I would take healthy dd, and try to get a babysitter for dd with sore eye, if it's still sore today. these things can clear up really quickly if you bathe the eye v. freq. Def don't take dd2 to the party, even if it means dd1 missing it, no one will thank you for passing the infection on at xmas!

or maybe dd2 could go to the party with a friend and you could stay at home with dd1?

Yes I'd take both dd's. Eye infection not very major league - not in same bracket as a d & v bug etc. More a minor irritation than an illness isn't it

Unless she rubs her fingers in her infected eye and then rubs another kids, they'll be no problem.

agree with Lycra and Enid - -at ds2's nursesry you are not allowed to bring your child in if they have conunctivitis

To be honest, I used to find it really irritating seeing a toddler with runny or gungy eyes at playgroup. Although its not a big deal, it's a real pain when your child develops conjuncitivitis on Christmas Eve. Not so easy to see a G.P. then.

I agree with HMC. I kept my ds3 away from his Christmas party last week as he had croup (mildly) and I didn't want him catching anything else while his resistance is low, but an eye infection wouldn't have been the sort of bug I would have worried about him catching. It is not so easily passed on as colds or D and V is it?

At DSs school/nursery you were allowed to take them in if they'd been having treatment for 24 hours. Which Jenkel's DD has (and it's not yucky gunky, it's clear anyway)

Well, we didnt go. To be honest things like this dont bother me, kids catch things all the time and we cant keep them wrapped up in cotton wool, and i dont think eye infections are that serious. But I appreciate that other people dont have the same view as me. So kept both dd's at home with me, dd2 is now on some treatment for eye. Interestingly the gp didnt really want to prescribe anything, but he did after I pressed him a little.

Eye infections can be incrediably serious - Woo had periorbital cellulitis which if it spreads behind the eye rather than just around it can disrupt the optic nerve.... one week of very strong antibiotic and a couple of visits to eye casulalty it was ok, but I would also take eyes to the GP.

He looked like he had been punched in the eye, and his eyeball turned in to his nose (great on picture day!)

I think as its christmas its probably a good idea to be over cautious
