post-partum bleeding

I've just found MUMSNET! What a great resource. Has anyone had prolonged bleeding after birth due to 'hormonal' causes? I gave birth nearly nine weeks ago and have bled every day since - quite light till six weeks then heavier like a period (which I didn't think it could be because I'm bf). My consultant put me on a week's antibiotics in case of infection (though swab test clear) but still the bleeding continued. U/S scan showed no retained products either. He says it's 'hormonal' (though I've never heard of this happening)and has started me on progestogen (a week ago) which has reduced bleeding but I'm still spotting every day. Has anyone else had this? When will it go? It's really getting me down now.

Don't know if this is the same as you mean, but I certainly bled quite heavily for at least 6 weeks (and I think quite a bit more) after my first baby. It sounds a bit different because it was steadily heavy rather than increasing. I do remember thinking it would never end. Hope you start feeling much better soon.

There was this discussion on postpartum bleeding several months ago which you may find interesting/helpful. I hope it stops soon

I bled for quite a while after I had both of mine too. At least for six weeks and then that was followed by a period Oh the joys of being a woman

I'm still (lightly) bleeding and it's been twelve weeks yesterday. Went to my GP 3 weeks ago and he put me on the pill - said it was hormonal. Seemed to slow it down and even stopped for a few days, but then came back harder than ever. I've just stopped taking the pill, as a bit uncomfortable with taking it while breastfeeding (especially if it doesn't help). I've also had a lot of trouble with establishing a milk supply - still only 50% there. Must be the same pesky hormones. Anyone know if the two things are linked? Will the bleeding stop when I quit b/feeding? Or will the milk supply be better when I stop bleeding?
