I can only suggest system restore if it just happened. I don't use Vista but in XP you get to it by right clicking My Computer and selecting Properties or by going to Control Panel and running 'system'

What are Dell offering to do anyway? If you do give it them make sure they don't just mean wipe all your files and start again because that's what some places do.

I can't help noticing that your W seems to be not working. Is the keyboard playing up because that could mess things up if the accounts use the letter W etc.

Read this and see if it helps.

the keyboard is playing up but the accounts don't have a W in them.

Phew! Looks like Soupdragon has found your problem anyway!

As for system restore. you get a choice of restore points and if it's a recent one you can only lose anything changed since that. The whole thing is a bit complicated because it only touches certain types of files anyway. I don't really like it, but it's good for a problem that has only just happened.

Probably a silly question, but did you do the bit where it says:

"In the Value data box, type hard_disk:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe, and then click OK"

And did you make it c:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe which is what it would be on most machines

Oh and it really does include the comma after it. I just checked mine as I wasn't sure.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

I'd log on as DD and go to control panel - internet options and click the button to delete Temporary Internet files. It does no harm and sometimes clears a problem. I'm not sure what's caused it though. That is a bit odd.

As for google I'd uninstall it from control panel - addremove programs and then reinstall it.

Am a little concerned that these might be symptons of something worse though. This might be a good time to back up files to be on the safe side.

Oh bearing in mind that is Vista and not XP things might be in slightly different places.

Fingers crossed that is the last of it. AVG is pretty good yes. The Free version sometimes stalls on updating itself because the server it uses is a bit overloaded, but that's not a serious issue as it works the next time.
