Just had to install a new hard drive into our pc and used our original Windows XP disk (c. 2003)to reinstall the os. Can anyone advise which service packs we need as the icon with automatic notification of updates doesn't seem to have appeared today. Previously we were running IE 7 etc

Just go to updates.microsoft.com and let it do its stuff.

It will offer you SP3 (service pack 3) straight off which will mostly bring you up to date. Then you run through it again to get any new ones since that.

If you'd rather it was automatic check in control panel - automatic updates as I'm not sure what the default setting is for that and you might have to turn it on.

Also perhaps it is already downloading Service Pack 3 but taking its time becaus it is quite large (about 500KB I think)

Unfortunately when we eventually managed to get sp2 , the pc keeled over again (another blue screen Stop error). Have just got it back from the repair shop with an updated version installed so fingers crossed.

If you're having trouble then hold off from installing SP3. You can install SP2, go to the update site and choose the custom update which will give you the option to get all the security patches but not have SP3.

There have been no end of problems with SP3 so, if your PC is playing up, you don't want to introduce a new gremlin.

Try a program like Norton Ghost to make an image of your hard disk. It will save enormous time when installing a new hard disk. If you need to transfer data and program this article may help.
