Does AVG antivirus programme slow down your computer?

Since I downloaded the free AVG antivirus programme my computer seems to be very slow - could it be the AVG thing? I've done all the defrag and things that windows says to do and even taken all my photos off the computer completely and it's still slow. Word takes ages to open too.

Which version have you got? I've had 7.5 on all our computers for ages, but it doesn't seem to slow it down - not like Norton does for example.
There's a new version 8.0, which I've put on a couple of computers- I haven't noticed any problems, but it's not been on for long.
If yours is an oldish computer it may be a bit slow when its actually running an AVG scasn - it's best to do the scan when you can just leave it to run.
If it's running slowly, try pressing Ctrl-Alt Del & click on task manager. Then click on the processes tab & look at the numbers in the column to see if there's anything using a klot of memory - my AVG is currently using 2,048K, which is pretty normal.

Maybe it is abit old, it saw us through dh's thesis writing so we are due a new one but it should still be OK for basic letter writing and surfing the web. Tried to use the windows disk that came with the computer but it said not to continue as the version on the computer is more up to date than the disk - didn't dare carry on in case I lost everything.

Yes I have spybot but I think adaware has been deleted - no idea why. It couldn't be a virus though atleast that is safe , must just be old age.

Dh has made me delete loads of stuff and unplug my webcam and headphones and 'get skype off there' nag nag - as he says it must be slowing it all up. Well I did all that and it's still slow.
