Replacing broken 3ds with a 2ds - will same memory card work???

Having my arm twisted by ds to buy him a 2ds tomorrow as there are some good reductions about. He downloaded quite a few games for his (snapped in half) 3ds, I remember the last one was £30 so would love to use them again! I have the memory card from the old one, am wondering if it can be a) put straight into a 2ds, or b) have the data transferred to PC and then onto the new memory card (or c, it won't work as games will be in a different format and there'll be tears even though I've just coughed up eighty quid for the thing).
I've searched online but nothing clear, so really hoping someone out there can help!
