can anyone recommend a laptop that will run minecraft (and other games if he ever gets fed up of it!), I only have a budget of about £300. I've no idea what I'm looking for.

Forgot to add, ideally I'd want it to be no bigger than 13 inch.

You should be able to run it on any laptop, it doesn't require particularly high specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 (K8) 2.6 GHz.
RAM: 2GB.
GPU (Integrated): Intel HD Graphics or AMD (formerly ATI) Radeon HD Graphics with OpenGL 2.1.
GPU (Discrete): Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT or AMD Radeon HD 2400 with OpenGL 3.1.
HDD: At least 200MB for Game Core and Other Files.
Java 6 Release 45.

Those are the minimum requirements, but go for the most RAM you can get, and the fastest processor within your budget. There's a few review sites online which have tested machines like the Lenovo G50, if you google Laptop for Minecraft UK.

The only thing I would say with a smaller laptop is that they tend to run hot, because there's less space for the fan. And if it is likely that other games will be played, look at the one with the highest spec and make sure you meet those.

Thank you Easy, I made the mistake of going into PC world. The man was telling me the only way it will work on a laptop is if I was spending at least £500. He couldn't quite tell me why I needed a more expensive one. I don't think he knew what he was talking about, at one point he tries to sell me a laptop that wouldn't quite do the job but was blue so my ds would love it! I obviously left at that point.

DS has a Lenovo and only seems to play Minecraft on it! There's loads of sales on at the moment too so have a look around.

Bollocks. My youngest plays it on a battered old, second hand Toshiba Satellite that's been dropped more times than I can count and cost me £180 two years ago

Honestly OP any new laptop would be able to handle Minecraft. Dd's lags a bit, but not to the point that she cannot play it and tbf, that's probably because it's full of adware and goodness knows what else.

This is a much newer model of the same range that dd has

It's bigger than you were looking for, but I find bigger laptops tend to fare better with children. Dd's has taken 2 years of carelessness and tantrums. She is literally willing it to die so she can get an updated replacement, but it's not playing atm Grin

Mr PC World was blatantly lying, although I am impressed you managed to speak to someone in there - actual staff available to answer questions are thin on the ground in our local one.

I can't think of any reason you'd need a £500 one. This looks like it would work, and it's within your budget and size reqs, and was recommended in one of the papers. It won't be as good on the graphics as a machine with a separate graphics card, but that will bump your price up quite a bit, and it is debatable how much you would notice the difference on Minecraft.
