How do hotels provide wifi?

I'm losing the will here.
We have a big house with thick, stone walls. The router is on the 3rd floor (office) but i'm desperate to get wifi throughout.
So far we've tried BT 500, not compatible with macs, and a Netgear wifi extender, doesn't extend far enough.
I do have an ethernet cable in the kitchen but it's not conveniently placed.
Any ideas before I resort to baked bean cans & string?

You can buy a router extender. We have one and it has made a huge difference.

In my experience hotel Wi-Fi only tends to work in the public areas - bar, reception etc, and not in the bedrooms.

We've tried a router extender, it didn't extend far enough. Maybe some extend more than others? thanks though.

Many hotels have wifi that extends throughout the bedrooms now. It can be done, just not sure how!

Your router (the actual router, not the extender) might just be awful. Some have all the range of that baked bean can with string you mentioned. Is it an ISP provided one? Some of those are particularly bad.

Naoko its a BT 3, if that means anything?
We're rural and our internet speeds are hopeless anyway.

remember you can use the plugs that extend the signal over the electricity wires too - say one downstairs near the router, plug the router into it, then one upstairs in the office where the WiFi doesn't reach. meant to be a good solution for houses with thick walls.

most large hotels I have been in have multiple WiFi networks (ie multiple routers) eg one per floor.

we have a virgin router and it reaches up to the third floor, but is a modern house.

Spent ages looking a power line and I think they might work. They say we have to have the whole house on the same electrical cercuit which I presume is .

Reporting back.
The power line extended the wifi slightly but not into the kitchen or bedroom so its gone back.
Next to try is Apple Airport Express.

Powerline adapters can provide ethernet or wifi hot spots anywhere in the home with the electrical circuit. It should be possible to het wifi all over the house if you have enough adapters eg one on each floor to start with.
