How do i get rid of 'Friendschecker' and pop-ups?

Annoying pop-ups and something called 'Friendschecker' has started appearing on my webpages. it highlights random words in red and underlines them and pops up a box with a link to divert me to another page. And my net is running really slow.

I checked net advice but it is a bit conflicting and none of things I tried worked so if anyone knows how to block it that would be appreciated.

I'll not be able to get back to my PC for a couple of days but TIA.

First check your browsers advanced settings and make sure pop ups are blocked
Run your anti virus software - malware bites is a good free one to run aswell a as norton
Then go through your control panel and uninstall anything that looks weird- especially toolbars and crappy looking software. It sounds like a virus has put these on your computer and can download these things without you asking it to
If all else fails do a system restore from a date when you know everything ran normally.
That should do it

Thank you Doubtfuldaphne, I deleted a few things that seemed to have been installed in the last week and so far so good. I suspect it was something that one of the DC had clicked but who knows.

I did run an AVG scan but it didn't pick anything up. Am I wasting my money there (I paid for this). My DC have separate log ins and their own folders (not sure of the technical term) - does this affect the AVG performance? Surely it should run all throughout the computer?

Best of luck twofalls, -try looking in Control Panels and Uninstall programs.

AVG will run across the whole computer. You need to check the settings. Friendschecker is classed as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). This means it does what it says it will do but you may not want it. Some antivirus software doesn't pick up all PUPs, some only picks up PUPs when you specifically enable that option. I believe it is an option on AVG so you need to make sure it is enabled.
