For DH

I am considering an iPod or MP3 player - but I know even less about those.

Ok. I have no idea what you actually want so here's a few questions.

CDs or MP3's. Or both? What is it that he currently uses?

If you get him an ipod. Does he have access to a decentish computer that he can arrange all his music/playlists with?

Do you want him to be able to use it when out and about or just at home?

FWIW: I think an ipod is the best option as for the money it's the best quality and will last the longest. It's also the most versatile as he can use it at home as well as in his car or out and about.

CDs & tape atm

I'd have to do the computer stuff & yes mine is OK

Out & about while teaching dance

Possibly to plug a radio mike into (which hasn't been bought yet either)

(Thank you)

If it is for dance, do you mean variable tempo (so you can change the speed of the beat without affecting the tune)? Or do you just mean variable speed (so you can speed up the beat but it makes the tune higher)? Or do you actually mean variable pitch (so that you can make the tune higher or lower without changing the beat)?

The middle one is cheap, the first (which is useful for dancers) and last (which is useful for singers) often come together but are not cheap. Sorry have to run, be back later.

... or if you know what pitch and tempo you want beforehand you can do all the sound processing in Audacity and just use any old CD or iPod PA made for the aerobics/Zumba market.

The ones we have had before normally alter the "Beats per minute" BPM; I don't know what that or the options you gave me actually mean Wink

Can't do it in advance as we alter it dependent upon the ability of the class and a tune might be player at 3 or 4 different speeds during 1 lesson

I was thinking of something with a handle - more sort of carry-able maybe?

But it does look nice

I've got a Panasonic vari-speed CD player but it doesn't take ipod. I bought it 10 years ago and its still going but when we looked to replacing it with an ipod version they were very expensive. The problem is we need it to be able to fill a school hall with sound with the associated background noise of 15 children dancing.

We got it from here www.portogram.co.uk/Small-Audio-Systems/

We havealso used www.sound-dynamics.co.uk/?cPath=40 for stuff in the past

You need a sound system to plug into for the one pedro reccomended. Fine for shows for us when we have a PA but not for class when we have to lug it to a local school on a Saturday morning.
